Longtime dream of mine to watch sun closer atlast it got accomplished. I could see the fourth & fifth layer(The 4th and 5th layers of the Sun are known as the chromosphere and the corona) sun through the telescope they provided in observatory. Staff there explained well & detailed. The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory Museum is part of the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, which is owned and operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Located on Observatory Road near the Government Rose Garden in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, it is at an altitude of 2,343 meters. The observatory was established in 1899, and it's known for its historical significance in solar physics research. The museum displays various solar models and pictures, and one of its major attractions is the live solar image and the Fraunhofer spectrum, which is the colorful spectrum of the sun. It also houses a library packed with astronomical literature and significant archives⁵. The observatory itself has contributed to solar data collection, which is the oldest continuous series of its kind in India, and it plays a crucial role in the study of the equatorial electrojet due to Kodaikanal's unique geography. Visitors can explore the museum from Monday to Saturday between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, and it's recommended to check for any changes in opening hours before planning a visit.

Amazing place Mr Ganesan Sir explained all complex details about space and earth in a very simple way. Must place to visit If you are just going without interest you will not be benefitted if you wish to learn new things surely they will teach you more. 1. You can see Sun reflection in telescope ☀️ 2. You can view the telescope 🔭 which is 100+ years old which used to gather information of space 🛸trust me the telescope dome is just a wonder 🌌 3. You can witness India's oldest clock which is still functioning and mechanism of it is simply amazing 🕰 4. There is also night time visit to view stars and planet where you can use actual telescope. Interested people can enroll and watch the dazzling sky at night timings might differ on seasons by ( 11 PM and 5 AM ) 5. The surrounding and ambience is very pleasing and perfect for outdoor photoshoot with sky reaching trees 🌳 Really wondering how before 100 years when there is no transportation facility they have transferred the telescopes to Kodaikanal ❣This place has a great history 🌟

Though visited kodaikanal many times, but due to miscellaneous reasons couldn't visit this place. But this year trip we made it to this Solar Observatory, which was established by the British in 1895. Glad to visit this place this year on our Independence Day. The security at the gate provides enough information. The staff at the museum explains in detail N with patience. Nowadays because of the Internet we may learn more about the solar system, but definitely we must go N see this place. Visitors vehicles are not allowed inside campus. From the main gate we have to walk for 500m and little uphill to reach the museum. It's peaceful inside campus. And good walking too. Spare 3 to 4 hours to enjoy this place. Take your own water bottles. Please don't litter the place. Restrooms are available. Good for students.

Must visit place.. The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory was established in 1899 and is owned and operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Its longitudinal position makes it a unique site for the study of solar behaviour. The scientific abode also houses the most extensive collection of solar data, dating way back to the 19th century. Its unique geography makes the spot particularly ideal for accurate cosmic observations (especially related to the sun). The observatory also consists of an astronomy museum, which mainly contains pictorials of significant astronomical or solar events. A couple of models, a live solar image and the Fraunhofer spectrum (the sun’s visible colourful rays) complement the scientific vibe of the observatory. Rs. 50 - Entry Fee Need to walk 400m to reach the Museum.

Best thing in kodai apart from tourist attraction Best time to visit: Fridays at 10 am, as the observation of sun's spot can be seen clearly, due to less pollution from the clouds and mists Parking besides the rose garden Kodaikanal, Fees: free Timings 9am-12pm, not aware of evening slot Documentary available on request and public demand They have really maintained their equipments well, Entry fees: 25 per person, camera: mobile/DSLR You will learn a lot about the sun and the importance/ significance of sun in our galaxy/solar system There are 2 guide-cum-scientist, who will explain in both Tamil and English, they explain briefly about all of the history of the place and the sun's roles in the universe Do not miss this oppertunity at Kodaikanal

A must-visit place for astro lovers. The staff is so helpful in explaining the site. They show you the sun spots and the 5th layer of our sun with a telescope for the public, but the observatory telescope is not allowed for public use. I visited the Kavalur observatory before, where they showed their main telescope, but not much other details were found there. However, here they have many educative exhibits. My small suggestion to IIAP is to publish a book about what you exhibit inside the museum, as it's impossible to remember everything. Each of the posters you display needs more time to study. Thank you.
