Kolavai Lake — Attraction in Tamil Nadu

Kolavai Lake is a lake in Kancheepuram district of Tamilnadu, India. The town of Chengalpattu lies at the southern end of the lake. It is located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Chennai, near to Paranur railway station andChengalpattu Junction railway station. Due to water shortage in summer, Chennai water tankers are forced to collect water from the lake.

Kolavai Lake is the second largest lake in the Kanchipuram District after Mathuranthagam Lake. Once very huge, it has been reduced to nearly half the size due to the creation of the Mahindra World city on its banks and other encroachments. Kolavai Lake is well known for its perennial nature.

There are no records of going dry in summers. It even supplies water to industries in Chennai when the lakes in Chennai go dry. The lake is now being polluted due to the rapid urbanization of Chengalpattu. The early morning sunrise and the moon hovering above the lake over its waters in the night are scenic to the eyes. Glorious Lake which looks like a Sea is the Land Mark of Chengalpet. Originally it was still big. It has shrunk at least by 25% due to Encroachment at the Mahendra City Side.

Had such Magnificient Lake been situated anywhere in Europe or U.S, it would have been developed into a Grand Tourist Spot. But Governments here are So useless allowing the Lake to die. Waters of the Lake got polluted due to Industrial Waste from Factories and Sewage of the Town.

When you travel in a train from Chengalpattu to your daily commute in the morning, just try to feel this lake which gives you a special freshness with its petrichor. Also when you return at night, it again welcomes you with the electrified view which reflects the lights from the nearby roads and buildings. The lake has a prawn cultivation setup. The nearby industries from the mahindra world city extracts water from this lake. This lake is not recommended for taking bath or diving, as it is not entirely clean.
