The initial phase of the trek for about a couple of kilometres is a pleasant paved way. I have come across a Ganapathy Temple which is unique. Normally the trunk of the Ganapathy was either left swirled or right swirled here it is in the pose of blessing you. The next identifiable place is a forest department house called Aththi Uththu (A spring under a fig tree). I have to cross a small Vazhukku Parai (Slipping stone) where the steps are carved rudely and if you slip you have to fall down. During rainy season naturally these rocks should be slippery and hence the name is more apt. There are also two small caves where you can take rest in case of need. Once I crossed this stretch then I get a forest department shelter from where I had to get down to cross the river and reach the other side. There is always a iron chain for the pilgrims to take assistance during this stretch. Once I cross this rivulet then it is only climbing steep climbing and zig zag climbing till the last half a kilometre. The mighty hills and the path ahead are given below for you to realise the tough task ahead for next two hours. Once I climb the steep steps carved out of solid rocks I get zig zag climbing for next few kilometres. These are paths, stone paved ways and in times only tree roots. You can see the queue up and below like Zee. The valley gives sufficient cool and shadow as the Sun is to my left in the morning and my way is south to north. Now I get a sufficient space between my hill and opposite hill and the valley of the river is down below me. Sometime after I come across a place called Karappasu. This place is worshipped as it shows the impression of cow leg in the stone. Korakker Caves is my next destination. Korakker is one of the 18 Siddars who meditated in a place around 50 feet down. This place is easily identifiable by a big Shiva Image drawn on the rocks. There is a small stream near the cave where he meditated and this water is considered pious. Many skip this place because you have to get down and climb up 50 feet to continue your journey. After passing this I get a structure which is the temple of Erattai Lingams. There are two lingams with two Nandi in a temple. Both are self-manifested and since it is a set of two called as Erattai Lingams i.e., twin lingams.Further little ahead I get a small pond which was dry when I saw called as Naval Uththu. This is below a jamoon tree and the water of the pond believed to be a cure for diabetics. Another half an hour of trek finally gives way to Big Vazhukku Parai. Howsoever you are experienced a little bit of care is required during rainy season. Fortunately for me it is only imagination as there is no traces of water and it is bone dry. Some more time walking through the side of the dry stream and also crossing the stream in a place you get a huge Jackfruit Tree below which the Palavadi Karuppanna Swamy Temple. This is the God who safeguards the health of the people. Normally these temples are at the entrance of villages and are revered much. The name Palavadi indicates literally the temple below the Jackfruit Tree and by constant usage Pala Adi became Palavadi. The Stream now passes in front of the temple. There is a small village deity also opposite to this in the edge of the stream. The small circular valley comes to a dead end with ways to both my left and right side. The left side temple is preferable first which is Sandana Maha Lingam as you have to climb around 100 steps by crossing the bridge over the stream. The deities here are 18 Siddars, Sandana Ganapathy, Sandana Murugan, Sandana Maha Lingam and Sandana Maha Devi in that order. After coming down I have to climb the opposite direction but a short length. First I am bestowed with the Sundara Murthy Temple There is also another place called Tavasi Parai. This rock formation looks like a Ganapathy from an angle. This place is another 150 metres above the Sundara Maha Lingam temple. There two big rock boulders within which all the 18 siddars used to...
Read moreOn a monthly basis from Pradosham till Pournami (4 days) and from Pradosham unti Amavasai (4 days),devotees can visit the Hills. Trek is allowed from 6 am till 4 pm. During December, we reached Sriviliputhur by Pothigai Express from Chennai. After refreshments, took a bus straight to “Thaaniparai” – 35kms (goes via Vaathiraiiruppu) and reached in 50 minutes. Even if straight bus is not available, we can go to Vaathiraiiruppu and from there autos will be available to reach Thaaniparai, the entrance of Chaturagiri Hills, devotees are offered with “Annadhanam”. Few shops are available, where devotees can buy essential like torch, biscuits, water bottles, etc. Take Rs.5 ticket at the entrance.
Initially we will start with mud road, both sides covered by trees and greeny bushes. The journey starts with temples for Lord Ganehsa, Karuppannaswamy, etc . We have to climb a small rock and then the path is full of small, small rocks and stones. Then you can see Kuthiraiootru water crossing. One has to climb rocks most part of the journey. On the way, there are several places where one can see water flowing. Most of the places, water/small falls are used by the devotees for bathing, washing, etc. Most people walk with bare foot (mostly local and nearby people) and other with shoes/footwears. Even when one walks with barefoot, a person can wet his legs with the chill water that flows throughout the journey. Think during heavy rains, it could be tougher to walk/cross places.
On the way, there is Gorakkar Gugai/cave (slight deviation from the route, small distance). Water flows down there and a painting of Linga is done on the mountain. Also there is a Theepam at half the way of that mountain (where linga paint is there), which is lit. We continued the journey by praying Irattai/two lingam on the way. Throughout the way, both sides are greenish. Some places are narrow. Sometimes we climbed rocks, crawled, fast walk, water crossings. Some places, it is completely covered by trees and hence there will be slight dark. Almost half of the hills one can see light and darkness all over the places. Most places, we can see monkeys. They will take food from you. If they see you with food, they will grab it from you.
During Aadi Amavasai & Chitra pournami huge crowds throng here. Throughout the way at regular intervals, shops are available for these two days alone. Other days shops will be available only at the start and end point of the hills. One of the facility offered here is free food/annadhanam from morning till night/evening. Even shelter is available, for those who wish to stay at the top. Even at the starting point food is offered free. People call and offer food, which is very good activity/rare one. One more thin, people give information about the hill in a polite manner.
Once you reach top, you see shops offering flowers and all other required things for pooja. At the top, on the right we can go to Sundara Mahalingam temple and on the left Santhana mahalingam temple. Both statues will be leaning on the right. We have visited during the second day of Full moon day and hence very few people are there and hence there is no rush at all in the temple. We had a very calm darshan. Near to Santhana mahalingam temple, there is a way to ‘Sapdur’, which is closed by the Forrest Dept. due to wild animals. Information about 18 siddhars is available at the top, where one can learn about them. To visit, the Big Mahalingam, which some 4kms away from Santhana mahalingam temple, one needs assistance from a guide, without whom people could be lost. We thought to visit the same for next time. We completed the upward journey around three hours, with very few stops, here and there. We had hot meals at Agasthiyar madam and took rest for half an hour. We also donated a small amount to the madam.
We completed descend in less than 3 hours (reached around 6.30 pm). We completed the journey comfortably, within a day itself. The hike and descend requires half the effort of Velliangiri Hills. But this will be a...
