This mountain and the temple is under forest department. Yes, it's an reserve forest. Make sure that they are allowing to climb when ever you planned to go. If it's too rainy they will restrict everyone to climb, so it's better to confirm with the weather forecast that there is no rainfall during your date of visit. Own vehicle travel is best. Parking facilities are available at base point. From Madurai it will be about 40 kms, from Srivilliputhur it will be around 10 kms. Bus facilities are also available from Madurai, Srivilliputhur or from Rajapalayam. If you choose bus transportation, then reach out to "krishnan Kovil" stopping or if you get "Watrap" bus it will be more better. From both places share autos are available to "Thaani parai", buses availablity from krishnan Kovil/Watrap will be less frequent. But autos cost around 70 rupees. From Thani paarai trekking starts. You will be charged rupees 5 per person by forest department as an entry fee. Upto 20% of the total trekking distance steps will be available. Afterwards it's all rock path. Be careful with the corners. If you go by June, July months you will encounter enormous amount of mini waterfalls which running down the hills. You can even bath in it(but please don't litter with any cosmetics like soap or shampoo). It will took almost 3 - 3.5 hours for an normal adult who is amature in climbing. For regular climbers it will took only 2.5 hours(depends upon your determination and stamina). Drinking water tanks are available along the path with Excellent 👌 water quality. Morning breakfast will be provided by trust people at thanniparai and lunch will be at temple. Can trek with slippers, shoes. The Mountain is maintained well that no plastics or waste was found in the trekking path. I request you all to not litter the beautiful mother nature. Sundara mahalingam and sandhana mahalingam is situated in diff places. Sundara mahalingam comes first and for sandhana mahalingam you need to climb further more 20 min. And most importantly don't go out of trekking path. If you do so you will be lost in jungle.. There will be no cellphone signal once you climb 30% of the mountain. Best advise is to reach Thaani parai before 7.30 am. So that you can return down within afternoon. Enjoy and be blessed ☮️🕊️🥰😌

*Great trekking experience *Great Spiritual experience If you wish to have a great experience: 1. you should plan ahead - If you like being in crowded places, try going here during Amavasya (Amavasey), otherwise pick a date and time based on the availability (Pilgrims are only allowed based on the rainfall. Controlled by the forest department) 2. Be prepared - good to carry water, food (if needed), 1st aid kit, an additional pair of socks, towels, lemons, salt & sugar and your own trekking kit ( you get sticks at the entrance for Rs. 30, out of which Rs.20 will be refunded after you return the stick to the seller). 3. Timing - Remember that you'll have to trek for hours (typically ranging between 3 to 6 hours), so Plan A - starting early in the morning (forest department gate will be opened at 6:15 am or after sunrise), spending the noon in the temple premises and prepare to return during the early evening. Plan B - starting early evening (around 3 pm), spending the night in the temple premises ( there are couple of mandapam's for pilgrims to stay, in the temple premises), start your return journey early in the morning. 4. Climate - this is a very crucial factor. Avoid going here if there is any sort of rainfall. Avoiding direct contact with the SUN is a very good idea too. 5. Monkeys - You're prone to being attacked by a monkey if you carry anything in a carry bag or in your bare hands. Carry a stick to protect yourself. 6. Footwear - Yet another crucial decision to make. If you are a 1st timer, it is better to use a pair of trekking shoes or running shoes with a good grip. Surface and rocks are mostly slippery and burning hot due to sun. How to reach Sathuragiri? - Plan your stay in Srivilliputhur (Thiruvilliputhur). You can drive until adivaaram and park your vehicle there, If you wish to travel by bus, get a bus from Srivilliputhur to Watrap (watthirayiruppu) and from there you get auto's to Adivaaram. From there you'll have to depend on your legs!!! Note: You'll see Saadhu's or Saint's around the trekking route, so remember to carry a lot of change (5s, 10s, etc.) and any give-away's, if there are any)

Temple open days -------------------------- Until few years ago, temple are open on all days. However due to recent forest restrictions, temple is open only for 8 days a month (Approximately). 4 Days for Amavasai (Pradhosham, Day before Amavasai, Amavasai and day after Amavasai) and 4 Days for Pournami (Pradhosham, Day before Pournami, Pournami and day after Pournami). Temple will be opened for additional days during Aadi Amavasai and Thai amavasai but the temple will be overcrowded. Best Period to Visit --------------------------- Temple will be opened 8 days every month. But due to the presence of temple on reserve forest, forest officials may impose restrictions time to time based on Rain/weather. Best time to visit is during December(Last half),January,February,March(First Half),July(Second Half),August,September(First Half). That is in tamil months Markazhi, Thai, maasi, Aadi and Aavani. Though there are no restrictions to visit during other months, trekking during these months will be of lesser heat and less chance of rain (both rain and heat will make trekking difficult) Best Time to trek -------------------------- Forest officials will allow pilgrims at 6 AM on the days temple will be open and pilgrims will be allowed to start trek until 4 PM. However If you are traveling on last day of the 4 days, that is day after amavasai or pournami, you have to start the trek before 11 AM. On other days you have to start trek before 4 PM. Forest officials will charge Rs 5 as maintenance charges. They will also check your baggages and will throw any plastic/Polythene bags. Its best to avoid any plastic/Polythene bags. Water/Pet bottles are allowed. Its our responsibility to carry them back and not to pollute the hills. Its advisable to start the trek before 8 AM and come back to base after darshan before 6 PM which is considered as the ideal time. BSNL signal will come till second Hill and for most of the other operators, signal will stop after first km of trekking

The initial phase of the trek for about a couple of kilometres is a pleasant paved way. I have come across a Ganapathy Temple which is unique. Normally the trunk of the Ganapathy was either left swirled or right swirled here it is in the pose of blessing you. The next identifiable place is a forest department house called Aththi Uththu (A spring under a fig tree). I have to cross a small Vazhukku Parai (Slipping stone) where the steps are carved rudely and if you slip you have to fall down. During rainy season naturally these rocks should be slippery and hence the name is more apt. There are also two small caves where you can take rest in case of need. Once I crossed this stretch then I get a forest department shelter from where I had to get down to cross the river and reach the other side. There is always a iron chain for the pilgrims to take assistance during this stretch. Once I cross this rivulet then it is only climbing steep climbing and zig zag climbing till the last half a kilometre. The mighty hills and the path ahead are given below for you to realise the tough task ahead for next two hours. Once I climb the steep steps carved out of solid rocks I get zig zag climbing for next few kilometres. These are paths, stone paved ways and in times only tree roots. You can see the queue up and below like Zee. The valley gives sufficient cool and shadow as the Sun is to my left in the morning and my way is south to north. Now I get a sufficient space between my hill and opposite hill and the valley of the river is down below me. Sometime after I come across a place called Karappasu. This place is worshipped as it shows the impression of cow leg in the stone. Korakker Caves is my next destination. Korakker is one of the 18 Siddars who meditated in a place around 50 feet down. This place is easily identifiable by a big Shiva Image drawn on the rocks. There is a small stream near the cave where he meditated and this water is considered pious. Many skip this place because you have to get down and climb up 50 feet to continue your journey. After passing this I get a structure which is the temple of Erattai Lingams. There are two lingams with two Nandi in a temple. Both are self-manifested and since it is a set of two called as Erattai Lingams i.e., twin lingams.Further little ahead I get a small pond which was dry when I saw called as Naval Uththu. This is below a jamoon tree and the water of the pond believed to be a cure for diabetics. Another half an hour of trek finally gives way to Big Vazhukku Parai. Howsoever you are experienced a little bit of care is required during rainy season. Fortunately for me it is only imagination as there is no traces of water and it is bone dry. Some more time walking through the side of the dry stream and also crossing the stream in a place you get a huge Jackfruit Tree below which the Palavadi Karuppanna Swamy Temple. This is the God who safeguards the health of the people. Normally these temples are at the entrance of villages and are revered much. The name Palavadi indicates literally the temple below the Jackfruit Tree and by constant usage Pala Adi became Palavadi. The Stream now passes in front of the temple. There is a small village deity also opposite to this in the edge of the stream. The small circular valley comes to a dead end with ways to both my left and right side. The left side temple is preferable first which is Sandana Maha Lingam as you have to climb around 100 steps by crossing the bridge over the stream. The deities here are 18 Siddars, Sandana Ganapathy, Sandana Murugan, Sandana Maha Lingam and Sandana Maha Devi in that order. After coming down I have to climb the opposite direction but a short length. First I am bestowed with the Sundara Murthy Temple There is also another place called Tavasi Parai. This rock formation looks like a Ganapathy from an angle. This place is another 150 metres above the Sundara Maha Lingam temple. There two big rock boulders within which all the 18 siddars used to...

On a monthly basis from Pradosham till Pournami (4 days) and from Pradosham unti Amavasai (4 days),devotees can visit the Hills. Trek is allowed from 6 am till 4 pm. During December, we reached Sriviliputhur by Pothigai Express from Chennai. After refreshments, took a bus straight to “Thaaniparai” – 35kms (goes via Vaathiraiiruppu) and reached in 50 minutes. Even if straight bus is not available, we can go to Vaathiraiiruppu and from there autos will be available to reach Thaaniparai, the entrance of Chaturagiri Hills, devotees are offered with “Annadhanam”. Few shops are available, where devotees can buy essential like torch, biscuits, water bottles, etc. Take Rs.5 ticket at the entrance.

Initially we will start with mud road, both sides covered by trees and greeny bushes. The journey starts with temples for Lord Ganehsa, Karuppannaswamy, etc . We have to climb a small rock and then the path is full of small, small rocks and stones. Then you can see Kuthiraiootru water crossing. One has to climb rocks most part of the journey. On the way, there are several places where one can see water flowing. Most of the places, water/small falls are used by the devotees for bathing, washing, etc. Most people walk with bare foot (mostly local and nearby people) and other with shoes/footwears. Even when one walks with barefoot, a person can wet his legs with the chill water that flows throughout the journey. Think during heavy rains, it could be tougher to walk/cross places.

On the way, there is Gorakkar Gugai/cave (slight deviation from the route, small distance). Water flows down there and a painting of Linga is done on the mountain. Also there is a Theepam at half the way of that mountain (where linga paint is there), which is lit. We continued the journey by praying Irattai/two lingam on the way. Throughout the way, both sides are greenish. Some places are narrow. Sometimes we climbed rocks, crawled, fast walk, water crossings. Some places, it is completely covered by trees and hence there will be slight dark. Almost half of the hills one can see light and darkness all over the places. Most places, we can see monkeys. They will take food from you. If they see you with food, they will grab it from you.

During Aadi Amavasai & Chitra pournami huge crowds throng here. Throughout the way at regular intervals, shops are available for these two days alone. Other days shops will be available only at the start and end point of the hills. One of the facility offered here is free food/annadhanam from morning till night/evening. Even shelter is available, for those who wish to stay at the top. Even at the starting point food is offered free. People call and offer food, which is very good activity/rare one. One more thin, people give information about the hill in a polite manner.

Once you reach top, you see shops offering flowers and all other required things for pooja. At the top, on the right we can go to Sundara Mahalingam temple and on the left Santhana mahalingam temple. Both statues will be leaning on the right. We have visited during the second day of Full moon day and hence very few people are there and hence there is no rush at all in the temple. We had a very calm darshan. Near to Santhana mahalingam temple, there is a way to ‘Sapdur’, which is closed by the Forrest Dept. due to wild animals. Information about 18 siddhars is available at the top, where one can learn about them. To visit, the Big Mahalingam, which some 4kms away from Santhana mahalingam temple, one needs assistance from a guide, without whom people could be lost. We thought to visit the same for next time. We completed the upward journey around three hours, with very few stops, here and there. We had hot meals at Agasthiyar madam and took rest for half an hour. We also donated a small amount to the madam.

We completed descend in less than 3 hours (reached around 6.30 pm). We completed the journey comfortably, within a day itself. The hike and descend requires half the effort of Velliangiri Hills. But this will be a...

Devine place சதுரகிரி Sathuragiri Hills(Tamil: சதுரகிரி) or Chathuragiri is situated 10 km from Watrap (Wathirairuppu) near Srivilliputhur. The name Sathuragiri came from Chathur (4) Veda (Vedas) Giri (Hill), where all the four Vedas met and formed the hill. Another meaning is that the whole mountain is in square (Chathuram) in shape so they called by name Chathuragiri. Sathuragiri is the Abode of God. It is otherwise also called as Mahalingam Hill. This is also called as "Siddargal boomi". 18 Siddhas were said to live here. This is a mysterious hill where it is believed that Siddhars still worship the lord Shiva.

By Train: One has to take Shenkottai Express from Chennai and get down at Srivilliputhur. Then from there they can take a bus to Thaniparai (base of the Saturagiri Hill).

Up the Hill: For the first time, it takes nearly 4 to 5 hours to climb to the Top of the hill. Rest, can reach the top within 2 to 3 hours. On the hill there is no electricity, W L L telephone connection available (BSNL), getting BSNL cell phones only. We can find few number of shops selling buttermilk, coffee, snacks, etc. During some days like full moon day, new moon day and other festive seasons Annadhanam is served to the devotees from morning till evening near both the temples and stay in the shelter provided there before dark falls.
