Sri Kaalamegha Perumal Temple in Thirumoghur, Madurai is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, where this temple is glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by the Azhwars. According to the legend, Lord Vishnu took the form of a damsel called Mohini to defeat Bhasmasura, who got the boon of turning anybody to ashes when he places his hand over the victim's head. Bhasmasura tried to use his power over Lord Shiva, who gave this boon to him. Lord Shiva sought the help of Lord Vishnu, and thus he transformed as Mohini and lured Bhasmasura to put his hand in his own head. The demon was turned to ashes in a flash and was defeated. Another legend states that a war broke out between the devas (celestial deities) and asuras (demons) before the churning of the Paarkadal (Ocean of milk). The asuras gained the upper hand and the devas prayed to Lord Vishnu to help them to get the Amrita (Elixir of eternal life). At this time, Lord Vishnu took the form of the enchantress Mohini to seduce the asuras and made the devas to overpower the asuras in obtaining the Amrita. In this temple, Kaalamegha Perumal is giving dharshan with his usual pose, lower right hand with abhaya mudra, upper right hand with divine discus (sudharshana chakra) and lower left hand is holding the mace (gaumodaki), upper left hand holding the conch (panchajanya). His Prathanasayana appearance is unique here and can never be seen in other Divya Desams. Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi also give dharshan beside him on the left and right side of the Perumal respectively. One of the notable features of this temple is that the Goddesses don't touch the level of the feet of the presiding deity. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped here as Mohanavalli Thaayar, the consort of the main deity is housed in a separate shrine. The procession idol of the Thaayar is never taken off from her shrine except for the occasion of Panguni Thirukalyanam. This temple is also famous for 16-handed Chakrathaazhwar, holding 16 different equipments. He is surrounded by 48 apsaras (female spirits). Yoga Narasimhar is seen at the backside of Chakrathaazhwar. It also has shrines for Andal, Pallikonda Ranganathar, Anjaneyar. In the pillared hall, we can find the sculptures of Rathi and Manmathan. Thirumoghur is located in Madurai - Thiruvaathavur Road, about 12 km from Madurai. Buses are available in strict timings from Periyar Bus Stand and Maattuthavani Bus Stand. Shared autos are available from Maattuthavani and Otthakadai.
