Amazing temple, one of the 108 Vishnava Divya dreams. Only temple where you can find god in a standing, walking, sleeping and sitting position. Ranganatha Temple is a Hindu temple in Thiruneermalai, a suburb of Chennai, India. While the Sthalathipadi (presiding deity) is Neervanna Perumal, all utsavams (Celebrations) are for Lord Ranganatha. The complex is in two parts one at the base of the hill for the Staladhipadhi Neervanan (Ninran-Standing Posture), housing shrines of his consort Animamalar Mangai thayar, Kalyana Ramar and Andal. Shrine for Anjaneya (Hanuman) is to the right as one climbs up to the hill shrine. The temple complex up the hill has three shrines for Lord Ranganatha (Kidanthaan – in reclining posture), Trivikrama (Nadanthaan – in walking posture), Lord Narasimha (Irundhaan – in sitting posture) and a Shrine for Ranaganayaki Thayar (facing East). It is a double prakaram (outer courtyard) temple. The Garuda shrine faces the Lord. The view from the top of the hill is wonderful. Brahmanda Purana refers this place Toyatri, meaning a mountain surrounded by water. Thiruneermalai, the modern Tamil name also means a sacred mountain surrounded by water. Among the eight sacred Vishnu temples where he manifested himself called "Ashtaswayamvaka Kshetra". As per Hindu legend, sage Valmiki, after composing the epic Ramayana, worshipped Ranganatha at the top of the hill. When he came downhills, he wanted to have a view of Rama, who appeared for the devotee. Lakshmi appeared as Sita, Adi Seshan appeared as Lakshmana, Vishnu's shankha as Bharatha, sudarshana chakra as Shatrugun and Garuda in the form of Hanuman. The temple has lot of inscriptions from the Chola and later Pandyas, indicating generous contributions to the temple. There are two temples, one at the top of the hill and other in the foothills. In all, the temple occupies an area of 15 acres (6.1 ha), with the lower shrine covering 3 acres (1.2 ha). The presiding deity of the temple in the foothills is Neervana Perumal in standing posture. Ranganatha is the presiding deity uphills and the shrine, vimana above the sanctum is called Ranga Vimana. There are images of Trivikrama and Narasimha around the first precinct. The temple tank is called ksheera Pushkarini and it is believed to feed the waters of Vaikunta, the Ocean of Milk. Karunya Pushkarini is the second tank, which is believed to have formed from the weeping of Narasimha, who was moved by the divine prayers of Prahalad. There are two tanks called Swarna Pushkarini and Siddha Pushkarin. As per a legend, Thirumangai Azhwar was held up in the top of the mountain for six months as the place was surrounded by water. Thirumangai Azhwar has glorified the temple highlighting the unique aspect of the temple where Vishnu is seen in four different poses of Standing (Neervana Perumal), Lying (Sriranganathar), Sitting (Narasimha) and walking (Trivikrama). Bhoothath Azhwar also composed hymns...

Temple is for lord vishnu. This temple is 61st Divya desam in the list of 108 Divya desam This temple has two parts one is below the hill and another is above the hill. The lower temple is for Neervannapperumal (நீர்வண்ணப் பெருமாள்). This lower temple has sannadhis for 1) sri Ramar setha and lakshmanar 2) Animaamalarmangai (அணிமாமலர் மங்கை தாயார்) 3) Aandal natchiyar and separate sannadhi for 12 azhvaras and achariyars ( panchaloga statues).

The upper temple is above the hill. Around 200 stone steps are built to climb the hill. Can climb with in 10 to 15 minutes. Throughout these steps metal roof is provided, which provides shade and cool atmosphere for devotees.

Once we reach top can see the kodimaram balipeedam and Garudan sannadhi. Here the main God is RANGANATHAR and goddess ranga natchiyar. This temple has sannadis for narsimhar and ulagalantha Perumal.

Here prasadham stall is available where you get water bottles and prasadhams. Rates u can check with stallkeeper.

Now u can come out sit and relax for some time. When you walk down there is anjaneyar sannadhi which is must visit sannadhi atlast when ever you visit vishnu temple.

Speciality of this temple is, you can worship 4 forms of vishnu in single temple. That Is 1) NINDRAN 2) KIDANTHAN 3) IRUNTHAN and 4) NADANTHAN.

Thiruneermalai is one among the 108 Divyadesams found in Chennai near also known as in olden days Thondai Nadu. The Sthalam Perumal gives his dharsan in four different forms like Sri Neervannar as Nindraan (Standing), Lord Narasimhar as Irunthaan (Sitting), Lord Ranganathar as Kidanthaan (supine pose) and Lord Thiruvikraman as Nadanthaan (Walking). Though it is very common way of dharshan. What is uncommon is getting dharsan of all four types in in single Divyadesams. This Thiruneermalai Kshetram is also called as "Thoyagiri Kshetram" and also as "Thothadri". Thoya means "Water" and Adhiri means "Mountain" (malai). Since the mountain is surrounded by water, this sthalam is named as "Thiru Neermalai". The Thiruneermalai Sthalam is located in south part of Chennai, Kanchipuram distric, Tamil Nadu. We can reach by road from GST road nearly about 4 kilometres from Chrompet. The neareat raily station is Pallavaram & Chrompet Railway Stations. Historical importance: It was said that Saint Thirumangai Alwar came here to get the Dharshan of the Perumal. During that time the small hill was fully surrounded by water. Alwar didn’t felt like going without the dharsan, hence he stayed back for six months to worship the Perumal. Alwar also sang thiruvaimozhi. The uchvar Ranganathar and Neervannar both gives dharsan in the temple located the base of hill. There is small pond (Thepakullam). Whenever you find time, please visit and...

I visited this temple today morning and it has given me immense happiness. There are 2 temples here one at the base of the hill dedicated to Lord Vishnu known here as Niravanna Perumal and other at the hill, the presiding deity is Lord Ranganathar. There are also shrines for Lord Narasimha, Ulagalantha Perumal. The prasadam here is famous yellow dosai and Tamarind rice . There are also a variety of other sweets and snacks available at Prasadam counter. What we bought was tasty indeed. It was a nice experience and climbing the hill was not very difficult as there are only 200-230 steps. I am a senior citizen and if you feel okay and confident of climbing do go ahead. I did without any issues. I had total faith in Him. Didn't even get sore legs. It just took about 12-15 mts for this ascend. The steps are not steep and one can take rest and move. Another attractive thing especially for small kids would the flight landing at Meenambakkam airport. One can see it from close quarters. In a span of 10 minutes I could witness 7-8 flights. Enjoyed being in Tiruneermalai. One must explore and visit our ancient temples as there is lot to learn about our tradition and culture.
