Thirunelvayil Shiva Parvati Temple — Attraction in Tamil Nadu

The temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of Saint Tirugnanasambandar. This is the 3rd Shiva temple on the northern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns. Vaikasi Visakam in March-April, Purattasi Navarathri in September-October, Karthikai Soma varams-Mondays in November-December are the festivals celebrated in the temple. Lord is Swayambumurthy in the temple. The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 7.15 p.m. Sri Uchinathar Temple, Sivapuri – 608 002, Via Annamalainagar, Cuddalore district. The temple has one prakara. The Rajagopuram is facing east. Lord is facing east and Ambica south. Parents perform the Anna Prasana ritual (first rice feeding of the child) in the temple hoping that the child would never face food problem in life. Devotees perform abishek to Lord and Mother and offer vastras. This is one of the sacred places where Lord Shiva granted darshan to Sage Agasthya. Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi appear in their wedding posture behind the Shivalinga. During his stay in Chidambaram, Sambandar used to come to this temple everyday to worship the Lord. The places around Chidambaram were once green with paddy fields, hence the name of the place Tirunelvoyil, presently called Sivapuri. The temple is in this place. After Mother Parvathi fed Gnanasambandar with Wisdom Milk (Gnanappal in Tamil), Lord Shiva too offered food to the saint. Saint Gnanasambandar was born to Shiva devotees Shivapada Hrudayar and Bhagawathi. When he was three years old, the father came to Brahmma Theertha in the Sirkali temple, left the child in the steps and went for bath. The child felt hungry and cried. Lord Shiva asked Mother Parvathi to feed the child which mother did. When Shivapada Hrudayar came back and found milk drops on the face of child, he asked the child who gave him the milk. Child showed the direction of the temple and sung the first hymn “Thodu Udaya Sevian”. Shivapada’s joy knew no bounds when he heard that the Great Mother fed his son. The wedding of Gnanasambandar was arranged when he was 12. The relatives of both sides and 63 shiva devotees travelled to Achalpuram Shiva temple. It was midday. All in the party were hungry and stayed at Sivapuri. Knowing their suffering from hunger, Lord in the guise of the temple priest fed the party with a delicious lunch. Sri Uchinatheswarar Temple at Thirunelvayil (Sivapuri), Chidambaram- A padal petra sthalam

Chidambaram is a very sacred town which houses many temples. The Natarajar temple is world famous and it is the first among the temples sung about by the nayanmars on the northern bank of the cauvery. There are 3 more padal petra sthalams in Chidambaram which are equally ancient but rarely visited as the Nataraja temple dwarfs the other temples by its uniqueness.

All four temples are within 2-3 kms radius in the southern direction from the Nataraja temple .

How to reach:

The road crosses the Coleroon river and here you take a right turn at the end of the bridge and in a KM you will see the Annamalai university .

Proceed straight for about 2 kms in the same road you will cross mariappan nagar on the right the road will curve right and  you enter Sivapuram there you can see the pond of the Thirunelvayil temple with the majestic temple behind. A half KM away is the Sri Palvanna nathar Siva temple on the same road

LEGENDS AND STORIES; The temple has been visited by Gnana sambandar who has sung about the temple. the wedding party of this saint came from Sirkali and was proceeding towards Achalapuram near cuddalore . it was peak afternoon and the party rested here in this temple in the hot sun and were served food by the Lord himself in the afternoon in the guise of an old priest, hence he is called Sri Uchinatheswarar or also Madhyaneshwarar.

The temple by itself is small but has many exquisite carvings and is patronised by the nagarthar Chettiars . It is well maintained.

There is a single praharam with the majestic Shiva Lingam which is a Swayambhu one who manifested himself facing east. Behind the linga are sculptures of Siva and Parvathi seen in Kalyana kolam as seen by Agastya.

శ్రీ ఉఛ్చినాధేశ్వరుడు, మధ్యాన్నేశ్వర స్వామి తిరునల్వోయిల్ ప్రస్తుతం శివ పురి పచ్చని పొలాలు కలిగిన ఊరు అని అర్ధం వచ్చే తిరునల్ వోయిల్ అని గతం లో పిలిచేవారు కాని ఇక్కడి శివాలయం కారణంగా శివపురి అన్న పేరు స్థిరపడిపోయినది. ఈ తిరునల్వోయిల్ చిదంబరము నుండి 5కి.మీ దూరము మరియు 2 కి.మీ దూరము అన్నమలై విశ్వ విద్యాలము. ఈ ప్రదేశానికి సమీపంలో ఉన్న ఇతర తేవర పాదల్ పెట్ర స్థలాలు - చిదంబరం, తిరువెట్కలం మరియు తిరుక్కజిప్పలై. సమాచారం మూలవర్ శ్రీ ఉఛ్చినాథేశ్వర్, శ్రీ మధ్యాన్నేశ్వర్ అంబాళ్ శ్రీ కనకాంబికా అమ్మవారు తీర్థం కృపాసముద్రం చెరువు స్థల వృక్షం (పవిత్ర వృక్షం) ఉసిరి చెట్టు (గూస్బెర్రీ) పతిగం (స్తోత్రం) అందించినది సెయింట్ తిరుజ్ఞానసంబందార్ 276 తేవర పాదల పెట్ర శివ స్థలాలలో ఒకటి. ఇది చోళనాడు (వడకరై)లోని కావేరి నది ఉత్తర ఒడ్డున ఉన్న శివ స్థలాలలో 3వ శివస్థలం. ఈ ఆలయంలోని శివుడు స్వయంబుమూర్తి (స్వయంభువు) తూర్పు ముఖంగా ఉన్న ఈ ఆలయానికి ఒకే ప్రాకారము ఉంది మరియు 5 అంచెల ప్రధాన రాజ గోపురం కలదు. చివరి పవిత్రోత్సవం (కుంబాభిషేకం) 11.09.2008న జరిగినది. అంతకు ముందు 01.09.1982, 16.06.1957 మరియు 24.05.1928 తేదీల్లో వేడుకలు జరిగాయి. ఈ క్షేత్రము మరియు గ్రామము ప్రత్యేకత, నయనారులలో అగ్రగణ్యుడైన తిరుజ్ఞాన సంబందార్ తో ముడిపడి యున్నది. కవి తిరుజ్ఞానసంబందార్ స్వస్థలం శీర్ఘాళి కాని ఆయన తిరువెట్కళం అనే మరో పాదల్ పెట్ర స్థలములో నివాసం ఉంటూ చుట్టు పక్కల ఉన్న శైవ క్షేత్రాలు సందర్శన చేస్తుండేవారట. ఒక దినము మధ్యాఃన్న సమయమునకు తిరునల్వోయిల్ గ్రామమునకు చేరుకొని క్షుద్భాద వేదించడంతో ఆ గ్రామములో భిక్షాటనకు బయలుదేరారు. ఆ గ్రామ ఆలయములోని అర్చకుడు ఆయన వద్దకు వచ్చి తన ఇంట బిక్ష స్వీకరించమని ఆహ్వానించారు. భోజానంతరం విశ్రాంతి తీసుకొని లేచిన సంబందార్ తన వద్దకు వచ్చిన పూజారికి కృతజ్ఞతలు తెలిపారట. దానికి అర్చకులు తాను నిన్నటి నుండి గ్రామములో లేనని తెలియబరిచెనట. నయనారుకు భక్త వత్సలుడు స్వయంగా అర్చకుని రూపములో వచ్చి తనకు భోజనము పెట్టేరని అవగతమయి ఆలయములోని శంకరుని అప్యాయతా అనురాగాలకు పరవశుడై స్వామిని శ్రీ ఉఛ్చినాధేశ్వరుడు అని సంభోదిస్తూ పదకొండు పతిగములలో తేవర గానం చేస్తూ ప్రస్తుతించారు. తమిళం లో ఉఛ్చి అనగా మధ్యాఃన్నము, నాధార్ అనగా దేవుడు, ఈశ్వరార్ గౌరవ పదమైన సంభోదన. సంస్కృతములో మధ్యాన్నేశ్వర స్వామి అని సంభోదిస్తారు. అమ్మవారు కనకాంబికా ప్రత్యేక సన్నిధి నుండి భక్తులకు దర్శనమిస్తారు. చోళరాజుల నిర్మితమీ ఆలయం. రెండు ఎకరాల స్థలంలో తూర్పున అయిదు అంతస్తుల రాజగోపురం కలిగి ఉన్న ఈ చిన్న ఆలయంలో బలిపీఠం ధ్వజస్తంభం ఉండవు. ఆలయానికి ఎదురుగా "కృపాసముద్ర పుష్కరిణి” ఉంటుంది. ముఖమండపంలో నందీశ్వరుడు, నవగ్రహ మండపం, అమ్మవారి సన్నిధి ఉంటాయి. మండప స్ధంభాల మీద గణపతి, నృసింహ, స్కందుడు, రామ, కృష్ణ ఆదిగా గల దేవతా మూర్తులను చక్కగా మలిచారు. గర్భాలయానికి దారి తీసే అర్ద మండపానికి ఇరుపక్కలా ప్రధమ పూజ్యుడు వినాయకుడు, శ్రీ సుబ్రమణ్య స్వామి కొలువై ఉంటారు. ప్రముఖ సుబ్రమణ్యస్వామి భక్తుడైన అరుణగిరి నాధర్ ఇక్కడ కొలువైన తన ఆరాధ్యదైవం మీద కీర్తనలను గానం చేశారు. గుడిలో దేవతలు శివుడు మరియు పార్వతి దేవి ఆలయాలతో పాటు, వినాయకుడు, మురుగన్, నర్తన వినాయకుడు, నటరాజ, దక్షిణామూర్తి, లింగోద్బవ, బ్రహ్మ, పంచ లింగాలు, శనీశ్వరుడు, చంద్రుడు, సూర్యుడు, తిరుజ్ఞానసంబందార్, కాశీ విశ్వనాధుడు, భైరవుడు, నవగ్రహములు, దుర్గ, చండికేశవుడు విగ్రహాలు ప్రాకారములో ఉన్నాయి. గర్భాలయ వెలుపల గోడలలో గణేషుడు, దక్షిణామూర్తి, లింగోధ్భవుడు, బ్రహ్మ, దుర్గ దర్శనం ఇస్తారు. లోపల చందన కుంకుమ విభూతి లేపనాలతో పుష్ప మాలాలంకృతులై శ్రీ ఉఛ్ఛనాధేశ్వరుడు నేత్ర పర్వంగా దర్శనమిస్తారు. మహేశ్వరుడు భక్తునికి భోజనం అందించిన క్షేత్రం గా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన ఈ క్షేత్రంలో అన్నప్రాసనలు విశేషంగా జరుగుతాయి. అలా చేయడం వలన తమ బిడ్డలకు జీవితంలో అన్నపానాదులకు లోటు ఉండదు అని విశ్వసిస్తారు. కొన్ని ప్రత్యేక దినాలలో భక్తులకు అన్న ప్రసాద వితరణ జరుగుతుంది. విశిష్ట లక్షణాలు గర్భగుడిలో ప్రధాన దేవత వెనుక, శివుడు మరియు పార్వతి దేవి వివాహ రూపంలో ఉన్న శిల్పం ఉంది. సెయింట్ అరుణగిరినాధర్ తన పూజ్యమైన తిరుపుగజ్‌లో ఈ ఆలయ మురుగన్‌ను కీర్తిస్తూ పాటలు పాడారు. ఈ ఆలయంలో జరుపుకునే కొన్ని ముఖ్యమైన పండుగలు - వైశాఖ మాసం వైకాసి విశాఖం.
