True to the tradition and the culture he represents, octogenarian YK receives you at the gate with a disarming smile and hands folded in a gracious namaste. You spy a tastefully made out lounge in the yard and a well stacked library offering free access to old and new friends alike. Once inside the house the thousand plus artefacts on display work magic on you and take you back a good hundred years in time. The antiques are everywhere. Stacked wall to wall on one side, floor to the ceiling on another and a good clutch of them suspended from the ceiling itself. Yet there is no clutter, positioned as they are with a touch of professional perfection, aided by a good lighting system. As for the antiques themselves, each of them has a story to relate - many had for decades served the royalty and the clergy of Chettinad -Tamilnadu. Many had come from other parts of the country and from overseas as well. The visitor is welcome to take any of the artefacts in his hand and handle it. YK comes over to you to furnish info on its uniqueness and the history of how it came to his possession. The communion YK has with his treasures makes him oblivious of the fact that he lives alone in the tidy house. You had planned a 15 minute visit but hardly notice that a good couple of hours have slipped by. YK again sees you off at the gate and you depart wondering if it was your first meeting with YK or you had indeed known him and his artefacts long before...

Read moreHiding in one of the many quiet colonies of Secunderabad, YK Antiques is a gem of a place for people of all ages. Mr. YK Murthy, the curator of this place, has turned his home into a museum with such dedication, interest and care, that it shows from the second you step foot inside. It's a whole new world!
My family and I spent about 2 hours in the evening and still fell short of time with so many more stories to hear about all the different collections. There were items ranging from as small as spoons to as big as full-fledged furniture that easily go back 200 years!
Every antique inside, projected 3 main aspects of all creations of the time - Utility, Durability & Beauty, even in something as small as an Agarbatti stand.
More importantly, a visit to this place, (irrespective of whether or not history and culture interest you) will leave you with an inspiration to be more mindful about what and how you consume; and also with a deep appreciation for Indian culture and the ideology of our ancestors who found ways to incorporate the goodness of the Earth elements into their daily life through utensils designed specifically for different kinds of food. You'll learn a lot in one visit!
My favorite corner of the museum was a mini Threshold curtain-decoration made of rice husk stitched beautifully for a door that was put together with block designs on wood.
Highly recommend YK Antiques for your next outing!! Do not...
Read moreMy first home museum visit:
It was a juncture when I was wrapped with negativity of life and happened to meet a friend who then introduced me to this amazing world of antiques and the lead man behind the antiques who we all fondly call YK sir. It was in one his exhibition when I first met him and listened to his stories on his collection of brass, copper and silver generation old antique items from different countries all over the world. I remember he told me, “Here all the items you see and touch will tell you unique stories” that made me teleport to a different world totally within a fraction of seconds. Yes, I felt the power of positivity from this old man who is very young at heart, mind and soul. My second visit to his home drew me more towards him and his energy. His love for each item, the warmth in the house, the walls so beautifully decorated with his collections, even his little green porch has so much peace that mesmerized me. There is so much to learn about life from him. His passion is something that keeps the place brimming with warmth just like his filter coffee made in brass filter coffee maker and served in brass glasses. The traditional authentic one. I highly recommend this place to those who loves tradition, who has passion, who loves to hear stories, who loves art and who loves life to visit and imbibe the energy and get enriched. It’s a must visit when you are in Hyderabad- the...
