After having a wonderful darshan of Thiruvaimooranathar in Thiruvaimur, we kind of drove fast keeping a eye on the clock. Came to know that such big temple is here in Thiruthuraipoondi and how it is sort of similar to the shiva temple in Valuvur.

Managed to reach the temple, temple in a very congested and busy market place area, and the road to the entrance of the temple was literally covered with cycles, bikes and cars and literally one cant go near the temple in any vehicle, that much vehicles are parked all over the place.

Tip: Park your vehicle father away and walk would be the best option.

It is quiet a big temple and the amount of people visiting the temple is really great. The locals call this temple as "Periya kovil", means big temple. Definitely the entire temple is atleast few feet below the road level / surrounding areas.

Temple faces west, Lord Marudheeswarar faces west, Ambal Shri Bruhan Nayaki faces east from a separate sannadhi. West facing rajagopuram present, Kodimaram present but outside the rajagopuram. 2 temple ponds are present, one inside the temple which is smaller in size and a bigger pond is outside the temple and across the main road..

Temple is famous for Gajasamhara murthy, similar to the Veerateshwarar Shiva temple in Vazhuvur (closer to Mayiladuthurai), the only difference is here the gajasamhara murthy statue is made in stone.

A wonderful story is told to narrate the sthala puranam of this temple. Long time ago there lived an asura couple Virupakshan and Jallika. Though the wife was a staunch Shiva devotee, the husband was a cannibal. How much ever the wife tried to correc the husband he would not listen, and went about his life as a cannibal and one day, he ate an young Brahmin boy who was on his way to Kashi for doing the rituals for his deceased father. This was despite the warning of Jallika that eating Brahmins would even kill him. As predicted by his wife, when the boy went into Virupakshan’s stomach, it turned into poison and killed him.

Jallika did intense penance to the Lord and the Mother here, who were in the midst of Vilva trees and pleaded for giving life back to her husband and the Brahmin boy. Pleased with her prayers, Ambal appeared before her and restored both of them to the original self. Since Jallika was having all the characteristics of a noble person, Mother blessed the re-born Virupakshan to have similar noble qualities.

The Brahmin boy asked the Mother as to how he was reborn when his fate decided otherwise. Ambal replied that the person who performed all the rituals for his ancestors, would be saved from all the dangers and hence he had to be saved. His life was an example for all of us to remember and perform the rituals like Tarpanam, Sraddham etc. She also granted moksha for his ancestors.

Before we close our small review want to quote a thevaram song
