Badshahi Bagh in Mohanpur,Fatehabad,Agra.
Badshahi Bagh, located in the village of Mohanpur near Fatehabad, Uttar Pradesh, was constructed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1659. The garden was built to commemorate Aurangzeb's victory over his brother Dara Shikoh in the pivotal Battle of Samugarh, which took place on May 29, 1658, following the illness of their father, Shah Jahan. The battle was fought near Agra, approximately 8 miles east, marking a significant moment in Mughal history as it led to Aurangzeb's ascendancy to the throne.
Mughal ruler Shah Jahan had four sons Dara Shikoh, Aurangzeb, Shuja and Murar and two daughters Jahanara and Roshanara. Shah Jahan wanted to make Dara Shikoh his successor. Dara Shikoh was a lover of literature and was brave, but was never a good commander compared to Aurangzeb. Famous book 'Tawarik e Agra' mentions that Shah Jahan sent Aurangzeb with the responsibility of the province of the south. Here, in Agra, Shah Jahan started preparations to hand over the throne to Dara Shikoh. As soon as Aurangzeb got secret information about this from his sister Roshanara, he marched towards Agra with his army. Dara Shikoh also left with his army to stop Aurangzeb. Both the armies came face to face at Samugarh. In a fierce battle, Aurangzeb defeated Dara Shikoh on 10 May 1658. Dara Shikoh ran away to save his life. After achieving his first victory, Aurangzeb changed the name of Samugarh to Fatehabad.
Aurangzeb got a garden planted here on 40 bigha land. He got four chhatris built on the four corners. He named this garden Badshahi Bagh. A grand gate was built in the middle of the northern boundary wall, this gate is the main gate of Tehsil Fatehabad today. A gate was also built in the southern boundary wall, which is now destroyed. A palace was built in the middle of the garden, however, this construction is now destroyed.
Originally known as Samugarh, Fatehabad was established by Aurangzeb after his victory and is situated about 30-35 km southeast of Agra. It later served as a stable for the Maratha king Daulatrao Scindia during the early 19th century. The town and its surrounding areas are steeped in Mughal history, with Badshahi Bagh standing as a testament to Aurangzeb's reign and the cultural heritage that followed.
