It is a divine experience to visit this holy shrine. Situated in the foothills of lower Himalaya range known as Shivalik, this is the seat of Mother Goddess Shakumbari Devi. Roughly 42 kms., from Saharanpur town and 15 kms., from Behat, Shakumbari Devi shrine is in erstwhile Jasmour State. While coming from Saharanpur, we leave Delhi-Yamunotri highway at Behat and divert to Shakumbari Devi Road. The all weather road is 15 km., long and ends at Bhura Dev Temple. It is considered necessary to have darshan of Bhura Dev before proceeding to Shakumbari Devi Shrine 1 km further ahead on the bank of river. The river is virtually dry except in rainy season and we have to travel on the river bed upto shrine. During rainy season it is very risky to drive in the river because the force of river flow can topple even a car / tractor or jeep and you don't get time to protect yourself. Many casualties are reported here every year during monsoons.
You can use public transport (pvt. buses) which are available almost every hour from Saharanpur. There are three access roads for the shrine. Those coming from Punjab / Haryana and Saharanpur, take Delhi - Yamunotri Highway from Saharanpur upto Behat. Those coming from Vikas Nagar / Chakrata take the same highway from opposite direction but they do not have to come to Behat because they can get a diversion for the shrine from Mirzapur / Badshahi Bagh village. Finally, those coming from Dehradun / Roorkee / Hardwar / Delhi may take another road from Delhi - Dehradun highway that would take them to the shrine.
There are temporary shops near the shrine where people buy offerings to the Mother Goddess. After having Darshan, devotees enjoy yummmy kadhi chawal at one of the many shops. People regularly organise feast for the poor (like langar organised in Gurudwara). Kadhi -chawal is the most popular item during feast which also...
