It is the only surviving temple after the Mughal destruction of the 17th century. Its location in a then forest-clad area at a considerable distance from the city saved it from destruction. It is one the best example of temple’s architectural beauty in Varanasi.According to the practice of ‘Panchkrosi Yatra’, this is the first night halt for the devotees and pilgrims during their ‘salvation walk’ of almost 80 Km around Varanasi. Its mentions could be found in Kashi Khand and other ancient books of India. This present temple structure was built in the 12th century by the Garhwal Rulers in Nagar style of architecture which has idols of many deities such as Adhnareshwar, Brahma, Vishnu, Uma Maheswar, Balram-Revati and Nagas too. Adjacent Kund (Pond) was built by Rani Bhawani Queen of Bengal in 18th Century CE.In mid-18th century Rani Bhavani of Bengal constructed a massive pond at the old site, close...

The place one of the city's architectural heritage and is also one of the major stops in पंच-कोशी. The temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and is looked after by the Indian National Trust for Architectural and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). It's interesting to know that the pond, the outermost temple and the innermost womb belong to 3 different eras that are 18th, 16th and 12th centuries respectively. Although, a lot of renovations can be seen. The outer structure features many Hindu deities and their incarnations, some of them being very rare to be seen. Most it seems to be in a good state. However, the pond isn't clean enough, polluted with mostly plastic bags and wrappers. Plus, the locals appear to be little to not at all concerned. Would be happy to see more inclusive and protective...

Shri Kardameshwar Temple is one of the ancient Shiva temples in Varanasi, believed to be associated with the legend of Kardama Muni, a revered sage mentioned in Hindu scriptures like the Bhagavata Purana. It is said that Kardama Muni performed penance at this spot to please Lord Vishnu and was later blessed with a divine vision. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Kardameshwar Mahadev. It is considered one of the Kashi Khand's 56 Vinayakas (guardian deities) and part of the sacred geography of Varanasi that spiritually protects the city. The temple architecture is traditional, with a calm pond nearby that adds to its peaceful setting.
