Tarkeshwar temple and ashram 40km above from Lansdowne
One of the best place for a calm composed mind set up I have ever visited.
Suitable for: This is a religious area for worship and meditation purpose. (Not really meant for showing off romance or having a fun party kind of area.... Please try to maintain the silence here, try not to disturb others by your noise. also don't litter here..use proper dustbins provided Enjoy the calmness of nature and learn to hear the sound of silence.
Network: difficult to get within the forest area.
Location: the temple is located in the forest area, about 10 minutes walk from the last car parking area. The walk area is well decorated with overhead coverings and lights at night.
Parking: at the last spot, the parking will be available for max of 20-25 cars, after that you might have to park roadside. No parking charge needed
Temple: In the forest, made of cemented material, being reconstructed now with the donation amount. Have few small Hut like areas, One sculpture of Lord Shiva over one of them. You can simply sit and enjoy the puja or silence there.
🐒 Monkey: normally a large amount of monkeys and langur will be there... usually not harmful (like that of Brindavan) However, don't try to disturb them or mimic them...they might get offended and attack you.
Residential area: There are 3 ashrams there. One is for chanting and meditation purpose, another as Dharmashala, and the main building is for pay and stay purpose. All the ashrams are separate from the temple...both structurally and financially. We had a great stay there with a fair amount of charges (1.2K for 2) . The people there are very friendly and helping nature. Specially Ranveer ji(Chief), Mukesh ji(Manager). The food is so nice 😋 delicious and filled the belly and mind both. It's a self service system, you have to wash your utensils after use.
Enjoy a good stay there. Night beauty is awesome...you can hear the sound of many wild animals and might...

A divine escape into the lap of nature – Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple is truly a magical experience!
Located high up in the hills near Lansdowne, Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most serene and spiritually powerful places I’ve ever visited. Surrounded by dense forests of towering deodar (cedar) trees, the temple exudes a mystical charm that instantly calms your mind and soul. It's not just a religious site – it's an experience in itself.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the atmosphere here is deeply peaceful. Unlike most temples where you often find noise and crowds, here you’re greeted with silence, fresh mountain air, and the subtle sounds of nature – birds chirping, wind rustling through the trees, and distant temple bells. The setting is surreal, like something out of a Himalayan folk tale.
🚗 Reaching the temple is comfortable – the roads are in very good condition, especially for a hilly route. You can drive your car all the way to the top. The drive itself is scenic and enjoyable for those who love winding mountain roads. No issues even for family cars like Ertiga, Kia, etc. 🅿️ Parking is free, and there’s enough space available.
To reach the main temple from the parking area, there is a short uphill trek through the forest. It’s not too difficult and completely worth it. As you walk through the tall trees with filtered sunlight falling on the forest floor, it feels almost meditative.
The temple complex is simple, clean, and beautifully maintained. You’ll find people meditating, offering prayers, or just sitting in silence – and that’s the best part. The sense of calm and spiritual energy here is something that stays with you long after you leave.
If you’re visiting Lansdowne, Tarkeshwar Mahadev is a must-add to your itinerary – whether you’re a devotee, nature lover, or just someone looking for peace. It’s one of those rare places where spirituality and nature come together in perfect harmony.
Highly...

People used to regular walking or climbing uphill will not get bothered with the tiresome way to the temple. But others, be prepared to walk down few steps (steps have height) from parking lot, then descend few metres, ascend few metres, descend few metres, ascend few metres and this will continue upto 600-700 mtrs and reverse while returning back. This whole path is covered with shed. 700 mtrs may not seem much here but when you actually walk, it is exhausting because at many places it is quite steep. Not suitable for aged, overweight, people with backache, foot or knee issues. Further, your footwear needs to be low heels or flat for obvious reasons. It may feel attractive to first time visitors but those who had been to Hidimba Temple in Manali or any such temple, it will appear same. There is a washroom half way that but that too is accessible by walking up a steep ramp only. I saw 3-4 barking dogs roaming on the stretch there but no monkeys even though I was warned by a local about usual prasad snatching habit of monkeys in and around temple.
There is a pool for both genders (saw some men swimming in mens' pool) and a shallow stream of cold water outside temple which is much relaxing for tired feet.
Distance from Lansdowne to temple is approximately 38 kms and there are steep turns and curves. People with motion sickness or dizziness issues must keep some medicines for that with them.
I went today on Janmashtmi and reached there by 12 noon. I got the space in parking area but when I was leaving around 1.30 pm, there was a long queue of vehicles by then on both sides of the road. So, if you have to get down much before the parking lot due to traffic jam, you need to do...
