This temple is located high up on a mountain peak, not too far away from Kanatal in Uttarakhand. You would first need to drive down to a place called Kaddukhal and park your vehicle there, before you embark on the climb to the temple.

There are two ways in which you can reach the temple - either by using the ropeway (cable car) or trekking for a distance of around 2km up the steep mountain slope leading to the temple. Once you board the cable car (after waiting in the queue for half an hour or more, depending on the crowd), it takes only 5-10 minutes to reach the temple entrance. However, if you decide to trek instead, it will take you 30-60 minutes or more to get there, depending on your age, health and fitness levels. The ropeway ride is smooth and quick, and offers a spectacular aerial view of the mountains and valleys below.

Once you reach the temple, you will realize that the climb was well worth the effort. It is a beautiful sight in terms of its architecture and simplicity. It is also clean, well-maintained and has ample space in the courtyard surrounding it. The main shrine has a small, but beautiful idol of the Goddess and you will experience calm and peaceful vibes as you stand or sit there, in front of the garbha griha. In addition to the main deity, there are idols of Hanuman Ji, Bhairon Ji, Lord Shiva, Parvathi Ji and little Ganesh Ji as well, in the premises.

The courtyard of the temple offers breath taking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It tends to get a bit cold and windy out there because of the high altitude; so, do ensure that you wear something warm while you are up there.

While in the vicinity of Kanatal, Chamba or Dhanaulti, a trip to this temple is strongly recommended, for both, religious reasons as well as to get a beautiful view of the scenic surrounding region. Besides, if you are up for some adventure, you can also choose to trek all the way up to the temple and make the entire experience a well-rounded and...

The temple complex is well-maintained and exudes an aura of ancient charm. The architecture is both intricate and awe-inspiring, showcasing the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region. The vibrant colors and detailed carvings on the temple walls add to the overall aesthetic appeal.

What sets Sarkunda Devi Temple apart is not just its physical beauty, but the spiritual energy that permeates the air. The serene atmosphere encourages introspection and a deep connection with the divine. The panoramic views from the temple premises are simply breathtaking, providing a perfect backdrop for spiritual contemplation.

The temple staff is warm and welcoming, offering valuable insights into the history and significance of the site. Visitors can participate in the rituals and prayers, adding to the immersive experience. The peaceful ambiance makes it an ideal spot for meditation and self-reflection.

Surkanda Devi Temple, located in Uttarakhand, India, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga. Perched at an altitude of approximately 2,757 meters, it offers a serene spiritual experience and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. The temple is part of the popular Devi Darshan triangle, which also includes Chandrabadni and Kunjapuri temples.

Journey to Surkanda Devi

To reach the temple, you need to trek around 2 kilometers from Kaddukhal, a small village situated on the Dhanaulti-Chamba road. The trek is moderately challenging but rewarding, as you walk through dense forests and lush greenery, often accompanied by cool mountain breezes.

Spiritual Experience

The temple holds significant importance in Hindu mythology. It is believed to be the spot where the head of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava with her corpse. This makes it one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, sacred to followers of Shaktism.

Inside the temple, the idol of Goddess Durga is adorned with flowers and offerings from devotees. The peaceful ambiance and the sound of temple bells enhance the spiritual aura of the place.

Scenic Beauty

Apart from the spiritual significance, the temple offers mesmerizing views of snow-clad peaks like Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, and Bandarpoonch. Sunrise and sunset from the temple are particularly spectacular, making it a photographer's paradise.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from March to June and September to November, when the weather is pleasant and the skies are clear. The temple also hosts the annual Ganga Dussehra Mela, attracting a large number of pilgrims and tourists.

Visiting Surkanda Devi Temple is not just a spiritual journey but also an opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the serene beauty of the Himalayas. It’s an experience of peace, devotion, and awe-inspiring vistas.
