Amidst the thick deodar is situated the holy temple of Binsar Mahadev. Along with its divinity and spiritual ambiance, this place is famed for its impeccable nature’s beauty. Binsar Mahadev is said to have been built in 9/10th Century and thus has been an important religious place in Uttarakhand since ages. With idols of Ganesh, Har Gauri and Maheshmardini, this temple is known for its architectural finesse. The idol of Maheshmardini is engraved with texts in ‘ Nagarilipi ‘ that dates back to 9th century. The shrine is believed to be built by King Pithu in memory of his father Bindu and it is also known as Bindeshwar temple. Overlooking a small stream and surrounded by forest of deodar, pine and oak, this temple makes quite a place to visit in the state How to Reach : By Air The nearest airport to Almora is at Pantnagar, the seat of a famous agricultural university, about 125KMs from Ranikhet and 127 KMs From Almora. By Train The nearest railway station is at Kathgodam situated around 90 KMs away. Kathgodam is connected by rail directly with Delhi, the capital of India, Lucknow, the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh, Dehradun the capital of the state of Uttarakhand By Road Binsar Mahadev Temple is well connected through road network. Since air and rail connectivity in Uttarakhand is limited, road network is the best and easily available transport option. We were on the way from Pratiksha River Retreat, Jim Corbett to Chevron Eco Lodge at Kausani.Binsar Mahadev Mandir was just a few Kilometers from the main road and as we were told it was a place worth visiting so we diverted and went to see Swargashram Binsar Mahadev Mandir.Built-in a beautiful location amid dense and lush deciduous forest white and red complex Swargashram Binsar Mahadev Mandir stands out.About six or seven temples have been constructed in a very small area. After reaching the temples on the first floor, reached after climbing a staircase, one feels that they have been built on top of the other two temples as one can see the top half of the shikhara of those temples sticking out of the floor courtyard in front of these temples. When we went there a fairly large family was conducting a ceremonial puja and there was an atmosphere of faith and reverence. We also took darshan of most of the Gods residing there and sought their blessings.Architecturally there is nothing worth mentioning. The way seemed to have been built one on top of the other in a hotchpotch way. No thought seemed to have been given to the esthetics of temple building. The amount of satisfaction in visiting this place would be directly proportional to the faith of the individual.A lost opportunity to build something nice.
