A Verdant Escape near IIT Kharagpur – Hijli Eco Park
I recently spent an afternoon wandering through Hijli Eco Park, located just a few kilometers from IIT Kharagpur, and it turned out to be a hidden gem of greenery and peace .
The park is compact yet lush, with canopy-shaded walking paths lined by tall Saal, Segun (teak), and Eucalyptus trees—perfect for escaping the city heat and reconnecting with nature . Within the grounds, there’s a small but charming deer enclosure where feeding often takes place around 5 pm—something I was fortunate to witness . Nearby, a well-maintained nursery growing native trees—like Sonajhuri and Shal—is also open for visitors, offering a peaceful spot to pause and admire local flora .
This is a great destination for a family picnic or a quiet evening walk. There are picnic spots under giant mango trees and simple play areas for kids. I found the surroundings very pleasant and well-kept . The entry is very budget-friendly—just ₹5 per person, with a nominal parking fee—making it one of the most affordable outings in the region .
Highlights:
🌿 Tranquil natural walkways beneath dense tree cover
🦌 Lovely deer enclosure with scheduled feeding
🌱 Local tree nursery showcasing native species
🍃 Ideal picnic spots and family-friendly spaces
💸 Extremely low entry fee and located within walking or cycling distance from IIT campus and Prem Bazar area
What could improve:
The park is small in size—best suited for a few hours visit
Sometimes amenities like benches or refreshment stalls are sparse
Overall, Hijli Eco Park is a serene and refreshing escape in Kharagpur—perfect for nature lovers and families looking for a relaxing outing. Highly recommend it for its charm, affordability, and...
