Purbasthali is a small town just 120 kms from Kolkata, located in the district of Bardhaman, between Katwa and Nabadwip. It is situated on the banks of a beautiful oxbow lake that is created by the River Ganga. This lake is 2 to 3 km long and attracts lots of migratory birds during the winter season. Bird-watchers will surely have a gala time here. The whole place of Purbosthali (also known as chupir chor) is generally covered by fruits and flower garden as well as vegetation. Although, the place does not have enough infrastructure for tourism but it is littered with many Zamindar palaces. Places to see at Purbasthali: There is a small oxbow lake by the side of the Ganga and is known for its clear water and heavy growth of sweet water plants. This lake attracts a lot of migratory birds during the winter months and becomes a favorite place for bird watchers. Besides, there are some fruit and flower gardens to check out for.    Read moreThis was a nice place once but due to rulling party they are not maintaining the place accordingly hence it’s now getting disaster day by day. Only in the winter you can come and ride boat which cost 150/- per hour including 4 person which is very less and reasonable that appreciated. The communication and public transport is very poor. Besides the place now private resort is constructed but the place is not safe after evening. The road is fully without light and very less light. This is not the place where i can spend weekend but we can stay here one morning to evening in the winter season. In the park there is room available but very high price. In the winter we can see lot of flowers. Previous in this place was popular as Siberian birds was coming but now a days only Egret is available. This place could be better and remarkable but in this place political party are not developed as a tourist spot, very lack of maintaining and lack of secured. Overall experience could be good, if you’re coming from long distance please don’t go as with the internet picture and real time atmosphere not matching. A small place in Kalna subdivision of Burdwan district where on the banks of river Bhagirathi (Ganga) an Oxbow lake have been formed as the river changed course continuously over the years. The natural lake spreads over almost three and half square kilometres and the channel of water extends in a closed loop shape for almost 11 kms. The lake is still fed by river water through a narrow opening. However due to rapid sedimentation and the river changing course further, it is now under threat to get cut off from the main river in near future. During monsoon when the water level rises the whole area gets flooded but in the winter when the water subsides, lots of small islands rise up. This has created a unique ecosystem where tall grasses and scrubs grow in abundance on these islands making it the safe haven for the birds, both resident as well as migratory.
