Sangchen Dorjee Monastery, or Pedong Monastery, is not just a centuries-old gompa—it is a living bridge between history, culture, and spirituality. Built in the early 1700s under Bhutanese influence, it once stood on a vital trade route linking Tibet, Bhutan, and Bengal, which is why even today it carries a blend of Bhutanese, Lepcha, and Nepali culture. The dukhang, or prayer hall, with its fading frescoes and murals, breathes out an atmosphere of devotion shaped by generations of monks. The monastery is also deeply tied to the story of the last Shabdrung Rinpoche, a revered Bhutanese monk whose mummified body was preserved here in a seated meditation posture. For years, visitors were allowed to view this extraordinary relic, and though it is now enshrined within the Kudung Lhakhang (a special shrine building), its presence makes the monastery not just a monument but a sacred site of pilgrimage. The road up from Pedong town is a short two-kilometer climb, uneven in parts and muddy in the rains, but it opens into quiet courtyards and sweeping views of hills, forests, and, on clear days, snow peaks shimmering in the distance. Pedong , a small village near Kalimpong (15 km) in the afternoon of 23rd March we trekked to this Sangchen Dorjee Monastry. A memorable place to visit. A serene place for meditations.
