There are several picnic spots in Chandannagar to spend a day out with your friends and family. Most famous out of them all is the KMDA Park, which is also known as Wonderland Park. The park is spread across the vast area of 44 acres and is an ideal destination for the picnic, school trips, and family gatherings. It is a well-maintained park, with manicured and lush green gardens, a variety of shrubs and herbs and a plethora of various flowers adorning the each part of the park.
KMDA Park is an ideal place for both adults and children. It is equipped with various sections such as Children's Park, boating complex, games and fun section, a restaurant and a guest house for the night stay. It is an ideal for a day out for the city dwellers and people from the nearby cities as well. The best time to see the park is the time of Jagdharti Puja. The park is lined with lights and the experience of seeing it then is one you'll cherish. The park also has lodging facilities if you want to stay inside.
Chandannagar came into being colonial times, proved conclusively by the fact that no mention of the town is found in medieval Bengali texts like Chandimangal and Manasamangal. Historians are of the opinion that the French created the town by amalgamating various smaller localities in the area. The three notable villages to be incorporated were Gondolpara to the South, Boro in the North and Khalisani to the West. The name "Chandernagor"can be first found in the letter dated 1696, intended for the officials of French East India Company, dispatched by Andre Boureau Deslandes and Palle, French officials posted in Chandernagore.
The First Director of the French East India Company, Deslandes paid 40,000 coins to the Mughal subahdar in 1688 to gain control of the area and build a factory there. But the first Frenchman to possess any subsequent land holding in this area was Du Plessis who bought land of 13 Arpents at Boro Kishanganj, now located at North Chandannagar for Taka 401 in the year 1673–74.
The prosperity of Chandannagar as a French colony started soon after. At this time the Company establishment consisted of 1 Director, and 5 members who formed a council, 15 merchants and shopkeepers, 2 notaries, 2 padres, 2 doctors and 1 Sutradhar. The army consisted of 130 foot soldiers, 20 among them were Indians. The Fort de Orleans was constructed in the year 1696-97 and was better defended than its French and British counterparts. After the initial success the French trade languished due to the lax policy of its Directors.
In 1730 Joseph François Dupleix was appointed governor of the city, during whose administration more than two thousand brick houses were erected in the town and a considerable maritime trade was carried on. It also attracted people from all over India who came and settled here for trade and commerce. The population of the city reached to be around a lakh at this time and the fledgling town of Calcutta was a poor cousin of Chandannagar. From Dupleix's time to 1756, Chandannagar was the main center for European commerce in Bengal. The city had thriving centres of trade involving opium, indigo, silk, rice, rope, sugar, etc. The fine clothes of Chandannagar were...
Read moreWow, extremely awesome place. I recommend not to visit it in the vacations or during public holidays, you might feel it huge. The entry fee for every person is ₹20 ( per person). KMDA park also commonly know as Wonderland park. It consists of many stalls and free rides for children's, you could either hangout here with friends or with your family. The total expense of each and every fare might be ₹120-130 per person. (If you wish to ride all). Boating was the best option available here. A typically size boat consists of 4 seats with ₹20 per head. Be careful while coming in night time or evening this pond consists of some water SNAKES, I encountered few of them during the boating time. So be careful with kids. You might even feel weird because the roads that connects the park from the station are not crowded, rather not to much old. I even found fell stalls breaking the Law a typically size ₹10 lays is charged ₹12-13 according to the sellers wish. And thars it! Visit it when you are free or during empty seasons like before or after Christmas. One of the best features available here was songs, almost every corner of the park is surrounded with green speakers. That really make the environment awesome. Fells good, and looks good, beauty of...
Read moreThe park charges entry fee @Rs.25 per head, @ Rs.50 per car park. The parking inside is not developed, we were told to park our car by the side of the perimeter wall and from there had to walk with our aged family member to the kids play area. No directions provided. The kids area has a few swings, slides, sea saw, a carousel and a toy ride train. The train was not accessible. The entire space is un supervised so it's self help. There are many variety of flora and fauna, no description is provided so anyone interested will have to use Google. There is a large fish pond lined with lots of green trees the water has many ducks. The water of the pond looked dark and a bad smell emanating as if it's sewer water settling tank. We did not see any rest rooms, there is no provision for food and drinking water near the kids play area. There is no provision for carting people inside the huge expanse of the park. Overall a very dull experience and found the unimaginative. A lot can be done to make the place an enjoyable experience...hope the administrators are reading our feedback and taking actions...
