Kawah Ijen Blue Fire Tour — Attraction in Java

The tour takes about an hour of quite steep but even and wide climb in the dark to reach the crater rim. After that it is around 30 minutes down to the crater on a steep, narrow, rocky, slippery and crowded path, where the blue flame and miners are. The smoke can be pretty bad, you will need good masks and still hold your breath when it's coming straight at you. When you get out of the crater, there's a short 20 minute easy hike to the sunrise view point on the rim. The crater and blue flame is something otherworldly, feels like you're in a sci-fi movie. Sunrise over the ocean is a great complimentary bonus. The lightning keeps on changing from the climb up in the dark to going down in daylight offering plenty of opportunities for sighs and photos. This is a good tour. It's a reasonably strenuous hike to the top of the volcano but is worth the effort. It was raining when we did the tour which makes it very muddy. Our guide was OK. Maybe rushing us along in the beginning. We were lucky enough to see the blue flame because the rain stopped while we were in the crater. If it's raining, there is no blue flame. Once the sun came up, you get to see were you are and it's beautiful with the blue lake with the fumes and mist moving across it. It was arranged by the Bwi travel agent. They came to pick me up 2am at where I was staying, then pick up other travelers on the way. We were able to arrive at the parking where very close to the hiking trail start. The travel agency offers us a head torch and air filter mask. You can get either hot tea or drink for 10000 Rp. and other snack, but I recommend you bring your own lunch and fruits. It was almost all the way steep road to the Volcan crater and the same way back but the view over the crater was absolutely amazing. It took about 3~4 hours a round trip. Highly recommend this tour...
