The Decline of Bali: A Traveler’s Disillusionment

For years, Bali has been hailed as a tropical paradise, a land of pristine beaches, lush jungles, and a vibrant Hindu culture that sets it apart from the rest of Indonesia. However, the Bali of today is a far cry from the idyllic escape it once was. After seven visits over the past decade, I have witnessed firsthand the gradual yet undeniable decline of the island.

The Deterioration of Cleanliness and Beauty Bali was once known for its serene landscapes and immaculate beaches, but those days seem to be slipping away. Once-pristine locations like Amed, which previously promised a tranquil retreat from the island’s busier hubs, now resemble an open landfill. Litter is scattered across beaches and roadsides, with little to no enforcement of cleanliness regulations. Coral reefs, once teeming with marine life, are now suffering from neglect, pollution, and unregulated tourism. The lack of sustainable waste management and growing disregard for environmental conservation have turned once-breathtaking coastlines into polluted stretches of land.

The Decline of Hindu Culture Amongst the Youth Bali’s distinct Hindu culture was once one of its most captivating elements, offering visitors a deep sense of spirituality and tradition. However, amongst the younger generation, there appears to be a waning connection to their heritage. Increasing commercialization and a growing focus on tourism revenue over cultural preservation have led to a dilution of Bali’s rich traditions. Authentic religious practices now often serve as mere tourist attractions rather than deeply revered customs. While temples still stand as testaments to Bali’s heritage, the essence of devotion and tradition seems to be fading among the youth.

Overinflated Prices: Bali vs. Australia One of the biggest shifts in Bali over the past decade has been its pricing. What was once a budget-friendly paradise is now priced at nearly the same level as Australia. With the Indonesian government imposing additional levies, cleanliness charges, and a staggering 21% tax on services, a trip to Bali is no longer the affordable getaway it used to be. What’s more frustrating is that these higher prices rarely translate to better service or improved infrastructure. In places like Amed, where basic cleanliness and road maintenance should be a given, visitors are instead met with broken roads, rampant construction, and exorbitant pricing that offers little value.

Amed’s Rapid Downfall: A Lost Potential A few years ago, Amed held the promise of being a peaceful retreat away from the over-commercialized areas of Bali. With its volcanic beaches and relatively untouched charm, it attracted those looking for a quieter escape. However, in just a short time, Amed has transformed into an unregulated, chaotic mess. The once-promising snorkeling spots have been replaced with artificial attractions, while locals have effectively monopolized beach access, making it nearly impossible to find a genuinely natural experience. Despite these deteriorations, prices have skyrocketed to match European standards, with little justification. Rampant construction continues to erode the area’s ecological integrity, turning what was once a hidden gem into an environmental nightmare.

Ubud: From Cultural Haven to Urban Chaos Once the heart of Balinese culture and spirituality, Ubud now feels like a bustling metropolis, more reminiscent of New York City than a peaceful retreat. The streets are overcrowded, making walking—let alone driving—a challenge. The tranquility that once defined Ubud has been overtaken by relentless commercial expansion, traffic congestion, and an influx of tourists that the area’s infrastructure is ill-equipped to handle. The charm of the rice terraces and cultural sanctuaries is overshadowed by the stress of navigating through an...

(Added Edit in the end) We visited here on 23rd June Our experience was so bad it can't be described

The guy inside, was so rude that it actually made me rethink my decision to come all the way here. We asked for pictures in the middle of both tombs, he kept shooowing us away saying go to the other one. Even though there was literally no one taking any pictures.

We went on his indicated spot and saw people were there, so we came back asking for pictures in middle of both walls. He kept saying "U go there first" , after my friend kept saying he wants to click picture, he agreed and made a face like why we are here. And he kept talking on his walkie talkie and busy in seeing reels on his phone.

Then he clicked the pictures side angled intentionally and all the pictures came out so bad we can't even use them.

We asked him if he doesn't want to, can we take use the mirror by ourselves and click picture. He straight up denied saying "HARD TO USE!"

So what are we supposed to do there? Look around and get back? The guy incharge won't take proper one, we can't take ourselves then it's just a deadend.

They should properly train the guys to behave well with Tourist, not to look at them with a judgement look.

He was so rude that we left in a bitter mood thinking this was waste of money and time. Not recommended.

If he wanted tips to act better, we'd have given him that too. But from the very beginning he was just there being disturbed by us and other people who was there asking him literally anything.

This is my First time being treated this way by a Balinese person, let me repeat MY VERY FIRST RUDE PERSON IN BALI and I've been to many places let me tell you that.

Better fill in the guys pockets before you ask for a pic.

EDIT: The Manager's reply sums it up all. I never reviewbombed a place. If saying the truth makes me a PERSON WITH PROBLEM IN MY LIFE, then it shows not taking responsibility for the staff from the owner. I mentioned the date too so Management can take a look for who was in charge on that day.

We always support local businesses. We want to lift it up for the hardworking people because Bali people are really generous and hard working. But if you don't see any problem in your staff and don't believe a customer's honest review, instead defend the action then there's nothing much that can be said.

The staff actually behaved badly, that too on a weekday, not weekends. If it was a weekend then I'd understand that he was tired or rushed. I was actually sad with this kind of behavior with foreigners which was a very new thing to me in Bali.

Still I wish you guys the best of luck. Probably we got the short end of the stick that day or the staff were shuffled. Idk what happened but my message to the owner would be " I don't have any issues or problems with you or the place, but a certain staff who was in charge that day, at 4 PM Slot. If I don't bring this up with you, he'll do the same with others. Which is not right. The other people from Tickets to Shuttle service were really welcoming and respectful people. You can...

Lahangan Sweet Bali: A Hidden Gem with Stunning Views

I recently visited Lahangan Sweet, a hidden gem in Bali with breathtaking views of Mount Agung. It's a perfect spot for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.

Accessibility and Entrance Fee:

Lahangan Sweet is easily accessible using Google Maps. The entrance fee is affordable, with locals paying IDR 20,000 and foreigners IDR 50,000.

What to Expect:

Photo Spots: The place offers around 7 photo spots, including a treehouse, a heart-shaped nest, and a swing (which has an additional fee). The staff is friendly and willing to help you take pictures for free, but a tip is appreciated. Facilities: Lahangan Sweet provides basic facilities such as toilets, a restaurant, gazebos, and seating areas. They also have camping grounds for those who want to spend the night. Nature: The surrounding nature is beautiful, with lush greenery and stunning views of Mount Agung. Cleanliness: The area is well-maintained and clean, with plenty of trash bins. Food and Drinks: You can bring your own food and drinks, but there's also a restaurant on-site. Best Time to Visit:

Morning: Around 6-7 AM or 10 AM - 12:30 PM for the best lighting and clear views of Mount Agung. Sunset: For stunning sunset photos, but be aware that the weather can be unpredictable, especially with fog. My Experience:

I visited Lahangan Sweet on Saturday, August 10th, 2024, from 3 PM to 5 PM. The photos I took were good, but the sun was starting to set, creating a silhouette effect. Unfortunately, I couldn't wait for the sunset because the fog became too thick.

Tips:

Arrive early: Aim to arrive before 1 PM to avoid crowds and get the best lighting. Check the weather: Before you go, check the weather forecast to avoid disappointment. Bring a jacket: The weather can change quickly, so it's a good idea to bring a jacket. Be prepared to walk: The terrain is uneven, so wear comfortable shoes. Overall, Lahangan Sweet is a must-visit for anyone looking for a peaceful escape and stunning views. Just be prepared for the possibility of...

Offbeat BALI: SAVE this before you forget🇮🇩 The eastern part of Bali has so much more to offer than the overhyped, Insta-famous Gates of Heaven Lempuyang Temple. While everybody continues to flock and tirelessly waits there to get the perfect picture during the sunrise hour, you can visit Lahangan Sweet. It is only 3.8 km away from the temple but has unobstructed, breathtaking views from all points. PRO TIPS: ✅ Arrive here at least 30 minutes before sunrise to catch Mt. Agung glowing at dawn. ✅ Entry to Lahangan Sweet is 30K IDR, and the pick-up truck takes 50K IDR/pp to drop you at the viewpoint. The pick-up truck is optional but should you choose to hike up the trail, make sure you are in your hiking boots. Your Bali trip is incomplete without visiting this location.
