We did the Rinjani trekking in August with our two kids (14&16 years). It was an experience we will not forget. Jamal was our guide. He is a really nice and friendly person and a responsible guide. He was very patient and followed our lead on speed and breaks. We were accompanied bij 4 porters and they took care of all the meals and carried al the tents, chairs, sleeping bags etc. They also helped us with our backpacks in the second day when it was a bit hard on us. They did not have to do that, it was great that they helped, they were so nice. We really appreciated this and it made the climb a bit lighter. The trekking was beautiful, the surroundings and views were amazing. The tents, matrasses and sleepingbags were good. The meals were well prepared and more than enough. The trekking/climbing was not easy on all of us. It was a bit to much for us to be honest. But we survived the trekking and did it! It was a great experience and amazing to camp in the mountain above the clouds. We thank Jamal and his team very much. We recommend the trekking with Jamal, he is really helpful. He personally picked us up from the boat for the transfer to Senaru. After the trekking he arranged a taxi to bring us to the Gili's. He got my daughter better shoes because hers were not suitable for the climb. If you do this trekking be prepared for a tough trip, but with great rewards.
Mount Rinjani is beautiful. It is a pity that there is much dirt left, at for example the lake and the hotsprings. It is worth taking better care of this...

Read moreI've knocked over many a mountain & a few volcanos- they don't get any easier! If you are going to do this, you need to be fit to get the most out of it. The summit climb involves a 2am start mostly very steep volcanic scree- think climbing an endless steep sand dune. I did 3 days - down to the Crater lake & back up to the opposite rim on summit day - it was a 17 hour hike (in my case, on about an hours sleep- anticipation!). No matter how fit you think you are, your legs are cooked at the end of the 2nd day, if not before. Anti inflammatories are a given if you are over a certain age - I'm in my sixties & an athlete - but was very glad the last day was (mostly) downhill. There were lots of comments about there not being anyone over 40 on the mountain! Be warned! I was guided by Lintang & porters Guv & Supri. These guys are a great team & made me feel very comfortable, accommodating my dietary requirements. Lintang was present enough to keep an eye on me & gave me space when he was confident in my ability. He is clearly skilled in determining how much support he needs to give. One thing that became evident was the respect he clearly has amongst the other guides on the mountain. If you want the best guide on Rinjani you need to ask for Lintang. I don't usually do reviews unless there has been something outstanding! Thank you Lintang & Rinjani Trekking Official! More than outstanding!
