Wapauwe Mosque is believed to be a continuation of the earliest mosque established on Ambon Island, representing one of the first points of contact since the 14th century between local communities and Arab traders who introduced Islam to the region. The original structure was built in 1441 on the hillside of Wawahe by Perdana Jamillu and Orang Kaya Alahahul, about nine kilometres east of its current site. As Islam’s presence strengthened in northern Ambon, the mosque was relocated in 1614 to Wapauwe, Kaitetu (or Atetu) Village. During the 17th century, as Kaitetu grew into an important trading and military centre for the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), the mosque’s move also reflected the expanding local Muslim community. The building preserves its traditional design, featuring four wooden pillars and a cone-shaped roof made from dried sago leaves, topped with a small wooden staff.
