Peguyangan replaced Tembeling as our favourite spot. Primarily a temple for local families to worship at, it’s also built to honour Nyai Roro Kidul, the queen of the Southern Sea (Indian Ocean) as she is said to meditate in the waterfalls.

Arriving at Peguyangan you will find a small Warung and locals renting sarongs. The sarongs cost 10k each. Others have spoken about a parking cost that we were never confronted with.

Again, you are warned of the steep and scary stairs. Heights are one of my biggest fears and yet I barely flinched at all. Don’t worry, you’ve got this! The most famous photo spot is right before the first big descent, quite high up on the mountain.

We have also heard a lot about people stopping half way or saying that the bright blue steps are the only attraction! No ways! Keep your sarongs on, it’s worth it I promise!

You can walk around and admire the unbelievably clear pools, sit and stare out at the ocean with the backdrop of a cliff and ambience of waterfalls or partake in some religious customs.

Now you may also hear rumours that there is no waterfall there, there is, in fact there are about 3. They are waterfalls by definition and we loved them, but that’s not the biggest attraction.

Walk up to the highest temple and walk a little further, down the stairs with flowing water and along the edge of the cliff to our ultimate spot on Nusa Penida. A pipe channels the pure mountain water in a sort of waterfall style to a set of 3 pools. Sporting Penida’s famous turquoise blue, the pool on the edge is the most perfect place to enjoy sunset. Waterfalls, the ocean and an infinity pool in absolutely pure water; the feeling is incomparable.

Don’t forget your 750 stair climb back to the top though! The roads back home were smooth, the air was crisp and we were on top...

It’s a really cool place, probably the coolest in all of Penida, but I can’t recommend it in good conscience. The hike down is far far far more dangerous than Kelingking and Diamond Beach combined. While there is no climbing per se, and there are steps all the way down, you are essentially trusting your life to partly corroded metal steps that lead directly over a 100m drop straight down. This is simply not safe. I’m sure there is no one who checks whether those steps are still in good enough condition to hold multiple people at the same time. Also will be very hard for you if you have issues with vertigo, because you’ll be looking down into the abyss (past and through the corroded steps…)

Additionally, when you are down in the pool area, beware of occasional giant waves coming in. Best case scenario, they sweep you off your feet and throw you against the rocks. Worst case they draw you into the water below and you drown.

5k for parking a motor cycle, 15k for the Sarong that you have to wear because it’s actually a temple.

Side note: this is one of the 2 springs that supply Penida with fresh water. That’s why there are multiple water pipes coming up...

Parking was 5k. Right before you enter they try and scam you for 15k to “rent” a sarong. You’ll probably have a towel handy which works as a sarong, they will tell you it’s not ok but it actually is. Refuse them until they give you their sarong for free so they stop bothering you. The “temple” is a small couple statues and absolutely nobody was there to check.

Anyway the hike down is pretty sketchy, some stairs are more like a ladder than actual stairs, some stairs have large gaps between them so if you miss a step you’re falling through. Towards the bottom of the hike the steps are wooden and some are wobbly. The pool is behind a big rock face. As you get close to the water it’s very very slippery and you can easily slip and die off the cliff. Some rocks are insanely sharp so be very careful and scoot into the pool on your butt. Once you’re there it’s incredible. It’s a great place to watch sunset and worth the hike. Me and my gf went for sunset and there was only one other couple there.

The average persons legs will be trembling by the time you reach the bottom, and the walk back up will have you sweating a lot but...

The ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida leaves 4 times a day: 8 AM, 9 AM, 10:30 AM, 16 PM, and 17 PM. The ferry takes 30 – 40 minutes. There are no pier at Nusa Penida; you have to get on and off the boat walking through the water, so it’s advised to wear a flip flop so you can take it off quickly. Nusa Penida can be done as a day trip if you’re short on time otherwise you can easily spend 2-3 nights to thoroughly enjoy what the island has to offer. I chose to do a day trip all arranged by @explorenusapenida as I had limited time. Have you heard of Nusa Penida?
