Bukit Tungku Wiri, commonly known as Bukit Teletubbies, is a captivating natural attraction located in Kampung Doyo Lama, Waibhu District, Jayapura, Papua. The hill's lush green slopes bear a striking resemblance to the iconic landscape from the children's television show "Teletubbies," making it a favorite among both locals and tourists. The name "Tungku Wiri" originates from the local language, with "wiri" meaning mountain and "tungku" referring to the traditional hearth used in the village.
One of the hill's most remarkable features is the panoramic view it offers of Danau Sentani (Lake Sentani). From the summit, visitors can marvel at the expansive blue waters of the lake, dotted with numerous small islands, all set against the backdrop of the Cyclops Mountains. The scenery is particularly enchanting during sunrise and sunset, when the sky is painted with vibrant hues, enhancing the natural beauty of the area.
Access to the top of Bukit Tungku Wiri has been made more convenient with the construction of colorful stairways, totaling approximately 135 steps. These steps not only facilitate the climb but also add a vibrant touch to the landscape. At the summit, there are designated spots for photography, allowing visitors to capture memorable moments with the stunning backdrop. The hill is also equipped with facilities such as parking areas, restrooms, and small food stalls offering local delicacies like ikan saus, papeda bungkus, and keladi rebus, providing a comprehensive and enjoyable experience for visitors.
While Bukit Tungku Wiri offers an immersive natural experience, it's advisable for visitors to come prepared for the trek. Wearing comfortable footwear and bringing sufficient water is recommended, especially for those not accustomed to hiking. Additionally, the hill can become quite crowded during weekends and public holidays, so planning a visit during weekdays might provide a more serene experience.
