Konservasi Penyu — Attraction in Pariaman

The sea turtle conservation is about one hour car drive away from bustling Padang. Entrance fee is just Rp. 5.000 ( aprrox. US $0.35) plus a parking ''fee'' for cars in the same amount. The conservation center itself is located close to the beach with a beautiful view as well as, after leaving the center, close to the local tourist beach with good Padangnese seafood. About the center itself - it is by no means a ''modern'' conservation center but I assume it does its job rescuing sea turtles and giving th a chance to lay their eggs on an artifically created sand ''beach'' in peace. One can see quite a few different types of sea turtles in various sizes - but they are all kept in relatively small pools. Also unfortunately there is no guide or any explanatory signage regarding the turtles. On the positive side - the place is not overrun with people (I was there during a long weekend) and kept clean, not only the turtle area but also the surrounding park. My kids liked it because they were able to see in a close-up range sea turtles - I liked it because it was silent and clean. Kota Pariaman merupakan salah satu daerah di wilayah Pantai Barat Sumatra yang menjadi lokasi tempat mendaratnya penyu laut setiap tahunnya.

Keberadaan penanggkaran penyu ini sebagai upaya untuk menjaga dan melestariakan keberadaan penyu dari ancaman kepunahan, seiring dengan meningkatkan perburuan besar-besaran terhadap telur dan daging penyu yang dijual dan dikonsumsi oleh masyarakat.

Untuk menjaganya, pemerintah Kota Pariaman telah membuat Kawasan Konservasi Penangkaran Penyu dibawah UPT. Konservasi Penyu Dinas Kelautan dan Perikanan (DKP) Kota Pariaman.
