The main building is properly preserved and still displayed the vibes of old mosque. Unfortunately, the toilet are in a poor condition (at the time I visit) and there are many cracks on the wall. The wudu spot also a little bit dirty, so it really need big improvement there. Overall it's still a comfortable and beautiful mosque.

Masjid Tuo Koto Nan Ampek atau juga disebut Masjid Gadang Balai Nan Duo adalah salah satu masjid tertua di Indonesia yang terletak di Nagari Koto Nan Ampek atau kini secara administratif termasuk ke dalam wilayah Kelurahan Balai Nan Duo, Kecamatan Payakumbuh Barat, Kota Payakumbuh, Sumatra Barat.Masjid berarsitektur Minangkabau ini diperkirakan dibangun pada tahun 1840, yang pada mulanya beratapkan ijuk sebelum akhirnya diganti menjadi seng. Saat ini selain digunakan untuk aktivitas ibadah umat islam, masjid satu lantai ini juga digunakan oleh masyarakat sekitar sebagai sarana pendidikan agama sekaligus tempat bermusyawarah. Masjid ini berdiri di atas tanah berukuran 50 × 31 meter atau seluas 1.550 meter persegi. Tanah tersebut tercatat di Kantor Urusan Agama (KUA) Payakumbuh sebagai tanah wakaf dari sejumlah kaum, yakni Datuk Rajo Manlike Alam, Datuk Bangso Dirajo Nan Hitam, Datuk Paduko Majo Lelo, dan Datuk Sinaro Kayo.Secara keseluruhan, arsitektur yang dimiliki masjid ini dipengaruhi oleh corak Minangkabau dengan konstruksi bangunan umumnya terbuat dari kayu. Atap masjid ini dibuat berundak-undak sebanyak tiga tingkat dengan permukaan yang tidak datar melainkan melentik; cocok untuk daerah beriklim tropis karena dapat lebih cepat mengalirkan air hujan ke bawah. Antara tingkatan atap yang satu dengan yang lain terdapat celah untuk pencahayaan dengan tingkatan teratas merupakan atap berbentuk limas. Bagian mihrab yang terletak di sebelah barat dan sedikit menjorok keluar, memiliki atap yang menyatu dengan undakan atap pertama. Bangunan utama masjid ini berbentuk persegi yang pada mulanya berukuran 17 × 17 meter, kemudian karena jumlah jamaah kian banyak diperluas menjadi 20 × 20 meter.Di dalam bangunan utama terdapat sejumlah tiang yang dipancang miring, kecuali tiang utama di tengah. Saya pernah sholat isya disini. Pertama kali saya melihat masjid ini saya berpikir, wah ini usianya pasti sudah tua sekali, karena bangunannya masih didominasi oleh kayu dengan gaya arsitektur khas minang zaman dulu. Hanya saja ada beberapa bagian yg kurang terawat, seperti pada lantai, tiang, yang sudah mulai menunjukkan pelapukan. Harus ada renovasi agar masjid tua ini bisa lestari dan dapat digunakan untuk ibadah. Apresiasi setinggi-tingginya untuk masyarakat yang telah merawat masjid ini....
