Tremendous potential here for tourists to be ferried here instead of driving here. The way here is certainly a challenge. Make it easier to get here would be very nice indeed
There's 2 ferries tied to the pier ... Perhaps those types too expensive to operate here. The idea is to include the ferry tickets into the entrance fees or even package it with lunch in the boat or use a cheaper ferry for lunch/dinner by one of restaurants here.
There need to be more efforts to bring tourists here. As it is was very hot and being in the doldrums would be nice if there are solar powered fans, even solar powered lights or other cooling equipments ... After all there is an abundance solar power on the equator.
There's a good row of restaurants and cafes here ... All that's need is to bring in the crowds
The museum by the equator monument is much nicer albeit can be bigger ... But the gardens are much nicer ... Love the pier and just chilling out under the thatchet roofs.
Lost 1 star due to the inconvenience in getting here ... Need a determination to get here otherwise would not have the will...
Read moreIn 1928 a Dutch geographer found that Pontianak was the only urban place in the world on the equator. Therefore a Dutch word in the monument "evenaar" (equator). The museum is really small and it is a quick go through. The warden is very friendly and will give you some information and take your pic with one foot in the northern hemisphere and one foot in the southern hemisphere. Unfortunately later on with modern technologies, they found that the equator was about 100 meters more to the riverbank. When you walk to the river along the wide walkway, you will find a small amphiteatre with another equator line. The real one! When you visit without own transport, make sure to make arrangements with your driver (taxi or grabcar) to come and pick you back up. Otherwise you will have to walk half an hour to the nearest suburb where grabcars available. One would stay about half an hour on...
Read moreNothing much to tell in the Equator monument, but you can have a picture with the background of it and turn on your latitude-longitude coordinate info on it. It'll shows the latitude of the Earth's equator is, by definition, 0° (zero degrees) of arc. There's several stores selling souvenirs, food and beverages, as well as several snacks corner and public toilet (which I wouldn't go there if I mustn't). The interesting part was the Kapuas river at the back side of the area, with wooden pedestrian path and the view of sunset in the evening. It's a nice place to watching sunset or passing by boats and cargo ships during the evening. The wind breeze so well. A good place to having some pictures, as well as hunting some. But I don't think the place is disability friendly since there are several stairs, but mostly flat ground. The entrance fee is IDR 2K/person and additional fee for...
