Wandering through the gates of Bali Butterfly Park in Tabanan (locally Taman Kupu-Kupu Bali) felt like stepping into a hidden magical world. As soon as I entered the lush, tropical greenhouse, I was greeted by the soft hum of life—and literally hundreds of butterflies dancing lazily through the air. The environment is just right for them: warm, humid, and filled with blooming flowers where they sip nectar and rest.
I spent my first hour watching the majestic Atlas moths, also called kupu-kupu barong, with their enormous wingspans of up to 40 cm—they’re among the park’s true stars. Seeing those delicate patterns up close was breathtaking. And I was lucky enough to catch a chrysalis hatching demonstration: one by one, butterflies emerged in slow-motion beauty—an intimate peek into nature’s marvel.
The park isn’t just about butterflies, though. I also wandered through the small insect museum, where preserved specimens of leaf insects, scorpions, spiders, and exotic beetles were elegantly arranged in glass cases. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the huge variety of Indonesia’s smaller wildlife.
Visiting in the heat of mid-morning meant butterflies were especially active, dancing over tropical blooms in shafts of sunlight—it was phenomenal for photos. But the pace is unrushed—ample paths, shaded benches, and even a koi pond made the experience relaxing. I’d lingered for almost two hours, lost in the gentle quiet.
Logistics were easy: the park opens daily from around 08:00 to 17:00 WITA, and it’s just a 30-minute scenic drive from Denpasar. Domestic adults pay about Rp 40,000 (~USD 2.50), while foreign guests pay around Rp 100,000 (kids at half price)—a modest ticket for an immersive natural exhibit.
By the time I left, the greenhouse behind me glowed under the late-afternoon sun. I felt calmer, more connected to this smaller, gentler slice of Bali's ecosystem. It’s a wonderful pick-me-up for families, romantics, or anyone seeking a peaceful interlude among fluttering wings. If you're up for a serene, educational, and visually stunning escape, Bali Butterfly Park is a quietly enchanting gem...
Read moreThe Bali Butterfly Park (or Taman Kupu-Kupu in Balinese) is one of the more magical places to visit during your time in Indonesia. The grounds span a huge 3000sqm and houses hundreds of different types of butterflies and other insects. Located in the Tabanan regency, this park is said the be the largest of its kind in all of Asia. This location also acts as a research centre, focusing on conservation and collection of endangered species of insects.
The trip to the park is approximately 30 kilometres north west of Denpasar and it is a good idea to hire a driver for a full or half day so that you will be able to explore other sights and attractions after your visit to The Bali Butterfly Park. A word of warning; make sure you head there before 10am, otherwise you will have to share the butterflies with loads of other tourists and that wouldn’t be nearly as enjoyable.
Children will love this attraction and it is entirely family friendly. The winding tracks and little bridges through the tropical gardens create a wondrous place for the little ones as they become mesmerised by all the colourful butterfliesflitting about right in front of their eyes. Some even like to get up close and personal flying down to land on you.
A museum type arrangement with glass boxes and display cabinets is located in a room through a walkway from the main area. This is home to many different creepy crawlies including scorpions, spiders, beetles and other butterfly specimens from all over the world.
