Returned for the second time, and as relaxing as the first. On my first trip, I stayed at Lantoro room, which had outdoor bathroom/shower. For this trip, it was Raja Lamba and Marranga 2. Personally, as a surfer, I liked the Raja Lamba the best, as its shaded, centrally located, had an indoor bathroom, and was quiet. The soaking tub is located outside. The Marranga 2 is spectacular, has the brunt of the full sun (good or bad), lots of outdoor space to use, and has its own private beach viewing platforms with a lawn for great sunset viewing. The Marranga 2 has a soaking tub and bathroom indoor, in addition to an outdoor shower. My perspective is that both are better than the Lantoro, and personally, I would chose the Raja Lamba again.
The service was from warm and friendly local workers, and for the location/culture, don't expect true 5 star service. Just be proactive and the services will get done, rather than waiting for the services to occur.
The surf crew is top notch, and proactive on providing you the best surf experience. Much thanks to Oye, Gus, Becky, and the safety crew. If you have any concerns, Oye will put you at ease, and his expertise and local knowledge is second to none. There are couple other surfspots if Nihi does not work (45 minute car ride, or 10-15 minute jet ski ride).
I had the Japanese dinner twice, since it was spectacular, and much different than my first experience (they hired a Japanese chef with an authentic tasting menu). Massages were great as usual.
The weather was rainy and windy, as expected for rainy season. I would chose September/October again, compared to end of Feb/beginning of March.
Can't wait for my next trip to Nihi, and would highly recommend any...

Nihi Sumba is not just a resort—it’s a masterpiece of nature, luxury, and soulful hospitality. Every corner feels like a postcard, every moment like a privilege.
One of the most unforgettable parts of our stay? Meeting Chris Burch and his wonderful sons, who are as inspiring as they are kind. They personally invited us to join their legendary treehouse gatherings, where laughter flowed under the stars, surrounded by jungle canopy and ocean breeze. It felt intimate, surreal, and deeply welcoming.
And then there’s the service: 24-hour free-flow food and drinks—yes, all-day, anytime you want. Whether it’s a gourmet breakfast at sunrise, fresh tropical juices by the pool, a sunset cocktail, or a midnight craving for something sweet—everything is beautifully prepared and delivered with warmth. No need to look at the clock or sign a bill—just enjoy.
The team at Nihi is exceptional. Attentive but never intrusive, friendly yet professional. They remember your name, your preferences, and even the way you take your coffee. Every moment is personalized.
From sunset horseback rides, world-class surfing, spa safaris, and beachfront bonfires—to spontaneous treehouse parties and heartfelt connections—this is the kind of place that leaves a mark on your soul.
Thank you, Nihi, for redefining what true luxury feels like—and for making us feel like family....
Read moreThis is a scandal. I am European and all this shocks me. This hotel (NIHI SUMBA) blocks all access to the beach for those who do not stay in their hotel at 20 million Indonesian rupees per night (minimum).
The hotel privatizes a public place into a private one accessible only to very rich tourists.
I've spoken with locals who have had tears in their eyes, explaining that this is simply corruption and that they feel powerless in front of wealthy American investors.
The locals are fighting to get the beach back, but nobody listens because it's all about money...
