This place is a must if you are visiting Bandung. The last time I was here was about 30 years ago. Now bringing my own family with kids, the view is still incredible. You have to pay an entrance fee and the difference between local and foreign visitors are exponential. I think it’s 20k IDR for locals and 200k IDR for tourists! ($7USD) once you get to the top of the top you are greeted by loads of vendors. They have official pass and they will stick to you like glue. They also have with them souvenirs and trinkets for you to buy. Negotiations and bargaining is recommended. They can be helpful and assist you to take pictures and offer an insight to the crater. Once you buy their offering they will leave you alone. But like the hydra, you cut one off and two more will appear 😂 Tips for souvenir shopping: expect to pay 40% less of what they offer. If the price does not meet your expectations, walk away. The smell of sulphur is strong and it may sting your eyes and the view is weather dependent. There are many activities to partake at an extra cost. You can ride a horse and even go on a guided walk to the lower part of the crater to boil an egg and witness the sheer heat from the crater. Overall it’s still a nice place to visit and you won’t have to spend the whole day there. If you’re coming from Bandung I’d recommend adding a place that’s on route to this venue like Dago Dream park or Lembang Farmhouse, these attractions offer unique experiences with very “instagrammable” spots to wow your followers. There are nice eateries and cafes along the way as well. While driving up, we saw a few establishments offering lodging. The Bandung region is now huge with “glamping” I have read somewhere that they’re quite affordable and modern.

My family and I went to Tangkuban Perahu 2 weeks ago. Tangkuban Perahu is natural tourism. And it was included in the places my mother would love to visit. We went there on Sunday so there were a lot of holiday-makers. To get to the peak we do not need to walk because the road can be passed by motorized vehicles. When we arrived, my family and I felt cold, so we had to wear a jacket. If you don't bring a jacket, you can also buy it there, because there are many sellers of warm clothes. We also smell very strong sulfur. Then, we went straight to the area near the crater to take a photo with the help of a local guide and we are very satisfied with the results of the photos. We were lucky because still able to enjoy the beautiful crater and take a photo because 5 minutes later it turned out that the crater was already covered by fog. Besides the crater, there was also a museum that displays the eruption phenomenon, there is also a mosque. For those who want to ride a horse, there also provides horses. There are many sellers of warm drinks and grilled sausages if you just want to warm up. If you are hungry, don't worry because there are restaurants that serve many menus. I recommended you to come here while on vacation and don't forget to buy souvenirs!

First and last, entrance fee is way too much for foreigner, 200,000 IDR on weekdays, 300,000 IDR on weekend. Once I reach there, managed to avoid the so-called photographers who are so-called helpful, apparently with the permit to be the guide on that location, in order to help local communities, as they were interested in other European tourists. Halfway through the location, there were people who kept following my wife and I, apparently trying to explain about the volcano and trying to be helpful. Claiming to be the people with the pass to be a tour guide. Then suddenly they started to convince me to buy some souvenir, at first it was 45, “empat puluh lima,” to which I thought it was 45,000 IDR, later during that journey they said it was 450,000. They were very persistent that my wife and I were force to negotiate, they even wanted to follow me back to Bandung to take money out of the at ATM. To which I persistently said cannot as we have no plan, we might even go to Jakarta after this if they wanted to follow. In the end I gave in having to pay 250,000 IDR for one set of souvenir, then the group of three left to become a group of one, to so-called guide me back to our driver. In total I spent, 650,000 IDR at Tangkuban Perahu, for a place where it didn’t teach me much other than how scams work at Indonesian tourist spot. Before coming to Bandung people often say Bandung people are friendly, welcoming and polite. My experience at Kota Bandung, indeed they are. I guess if you want to experience Bandung, avoid Tangkuban Perahu.

TL;DR: If you're going to visit and pay the IDR 200k(foreigners) ticket, do everything. Or else it may not be worth the money. Estimated time spent if dropped off at carpark: 2-3 hours That ticket price is one of the most expensive fees for an attraction around Bandung. Once you've paid for the entrance fee, you may choose to be dropped off at the carpark—about 20-30mins away from the top. Or, you may trek from the entrance gate called "Gerbang Masuk Tangkuban Parahu". From the entrance gate to the top would be 45mins-1hour of walking instead. Make your money's worth: -- After reaching the top and taking photos in the main tourist area, - -- Walk towards areas 5 and 6 shown on the map given to you. -- Keep walking until you find a sign that says "Sacred Waters". This will be about 20 mins of walking from the main tourist area. -- Over here there should be a few guides who can bring you on a IDR 150k(split between a max of 5 people, not official price. No leaflets or flyers given so you might be offered another price) guided tour into the crater itself. They won't bring you into the toxic ones, obviously. There wasn't a time limit given to us to finish and we took many great photos.

Pro : Good view of active volcano. Was lucky to be there on a clear day. Walking to Kawah Upas is worth it. No crowds and you can go to the crater surface but must be accompanied by guide. Guide charges 150,000 rupiah for group of 1 to 5 people. Con : Beware of so called guides stationed at Kawah Ratu who are really just trinket peddlers. They lie at the beginning saying they are licensed guides which do not require payment and offer to provide unsolicited information regarding the volcanic craters. They then proceed to 'help' take photos. At the very end they expect/force you to buy their useless trinkets. It is not one peddler but a group of them all at the same time. Foreigners are already charged 300,000 rupiah as entrance charge. On top of that to be cheated by these unscrupulous peddlers is just irritating. I wish the authorities would get rid of them.

It was slightly over an hour of riding my rented motorcycle to the top, at least I think that's the top. The weather gets chilly about 30 minutes before reaching and you'll be riding through some beautiful forests with cafes and restaurants along the way if you want to grab a bite or rest. You can drive or ride all the way up after buying the tickets. Once up there, you'll see many many vendors and they'll hound you everywhere you go. They'll take pictures for you for free, they'd say but... They'll sell you personalised tours to boil eggs and closer to the craters, etc. They'll sell you souvenirs, etc. Just ignore them, I'd say. It is definitely spectacular up there. The ride up is so much better than to Kawah Putih cos kawah putih you'll pass thru a lot of markets, shops, schools, etc. And it's also a lot closer than KP.
