Leaving Padang in the morning, heading for Bukittinggi to see Jam Gadang. After two hours driving, we passed through Lake Singkarak. Wow..it was an amazing view. From the beginning we entered Lake Singkarak, we had been served with a road that was right next to the bank of the lake a long the way. We took photos from best spots to get best results. We also found many souvenir shops offering dolls, puppets, handicrafts a long the road. I would suggest that all these shops should be renovated and set up in a more organized, traditional and artistical nuances in term of the architecture. A specific architecture of the souvenir shops a long side the lake would give a special memory to visitors and foreign tourist. Just to taste something specific from Lake Singkarak, we bought a kilogram of small fish like anchovies known as Ikan Bilih in local language. Wow.. it was costly a bit but the taste was not bad.

Singkarak lake is located 30 minutes from Solok City. It is stretched from north to south of West Sumatera. Singkarak Lake provides a very beautiful view of a lake. Here, they have spesific kind of small lake fish called Ikan Bilih. They said ikan bilih is only from Singkarak lake. Visitors can visit here on some stops area along the lake, but there's 1 big parking area for visitors to park their cars. This park called Pesanggrahan Singkarak, but again the government of West Sumatera doesn't take care this lake properly. They are not taking the entry ticket for person, but only for a parking time. This park is open 24 hours daily

Danau Singkarak is one of the largest and most iconic lakes in West Sumatra. Its vast, tranquil waters stretch between two districts, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The lake is perfect for relaxing, taking scenic photos, or enjoying fresh fish dishes from nearby restaurants—especially the famous ikan bilih, which is unique to this lake. With cool breezes and peaceful vibes, it’s an ideal stop for travelers seeking natural beauty and local culture. The surrounding villages also offer a glimpse into traditional Minangkabau life, making the visit both refreshing and enriching.

With a water surface area of around 11,000 hectares, this lake is the second largest lake in Sumatra after Lake Toba. The lake, which is located in two districts (Solok and Tanah Datar), was formed due to the tectonic process of the Sumatra fault and is part of the Singkarak-Solok Basin. The water depth reaches 268 m. Various species of freshwater fish live in this lake, such as bilih fish, nilem, rinuak, etc. Bilih fish is thought to only live in this Singkarak lake. To reach this lake from Minangkabau International airport it takes about 2 hours by road.

The lake, which is surrounded by hills, offers beautiful views so that it is often used as a big event, such as the Tour De Singkarak bicycle race. There are many things we can do, such as swimming, fishing, boating on the lake, or just walking around on the edge of the lake to enjoy the...
