When we hear the name of Abadan, words like oil and refinery come to mind. This lovely city with its warm-hearted people has a history mixed with oil and war and has always hosted tourists from all over Iran. From Rex Cinema to Gas House Museum, Abadan's sights are memorable and unforgettable.
One of these sights is the Rangooni Mosque, a mosque with a strange and unique building and a special and distinctive name. The architecture of the mosque is reminiscent of Indian buildings and its name is related to the colors of the residents of Abadan. The story of the construction of the mosque also has its charms and is worth listening to. The architects of the Rangooni mosque were from India; Therefore, the architecture of the mosque is in Indian style. This mosque has four small domes and two minarets. Its exterior is decorated with cement and is very colorful. The carvings on the exterior are also prominent.
The decoration of the mosque may look like plastering, but it is actually decorated with cement, in other words, its arrays are cemented. Also, the mirror, which is one of the elements of Iranian architecture for decorating palaces and imamzades, is used in the decoration of Rangooni mosque. It seems that some of the building materials, including paint, were brought from India to Iran. The building of the mosque is made of bricks and has lime and mud mortar and includes the nave, the main courtyard and the mosque. In front of the building, you can see a painting with the words "Bismillah Rahman Rahman Raheem". To prevent moisture from penetrating the base, two air tunnels are built under it.
One of the beautiful parts of this old building is its altar. Geometric shapes and slim patterns with prominent designs, full of colors and designs, are interspersed with the altar. This design is in such a way that watching the paradise comes alive for the human mind. Then we come to the roof structure, which has an interesting combination of oil pipes, railway rails and reinforcement. Rails, secondary beam and pipes are in the position of the main beam. Although the Rangooni mosque has been renovated; Cultural heritage lovers are not happy with the restoration of the building. These people believe that the painting and decoration of this building has a lot of value and is the distinguishing feature of the Indian architectural style. But unfortunately, in the restoration that has been done, there has not been enough attention to this point and the new materials and colors are not in accordance with the original materials and colors of...

Honestly, I didn’t expect to find something like this in Abadan. The Rangooniha Mosque is small but incredibly unique — a rare blend of Iranian and South Asian styles that immediately catches your eye. The colors, the detailed stucco work, and those onion-shaped domes almost make you feel like you’re somewhere in India or Myanmar.
It was built by Muslim workers from Rangoon (now Yangon, Myanmar) who came to work in the oil refinery in the early 1900s, and the story behind it makes the visit even more special. The mosque has since been turned into a small museum, showcasing historical documents and Qurans, which adds another layer of depth to the experience.
It’s not always open, so I’d recommend checking ahead if you want to go inside. But even from the outside, it’s a great photo spot and a peaceful little place to reflect for a few minutes.
If you’re into architecture, history, or just hidden gems, this place...
