If you want to do your best to understand this region, I feel like a trip to Halabja (Monument and nearby Shahidan Cemetery) and Amna Suraka (Red Museum) in Sulaymaniyah are three important things to do. There are no words for the atrocious and horrendous evil that has been committed against the Kurdish people. My heart is broken for them and this place.

I recommend taking a local friend or someone who can translate for you. Google translate can help with the signage, but the guides at the monument have always shared their stories when I've visited, and google doesn't translate speech. The personal stories have been so impactful to me to hear, and I've heard them use Kurdish and...

Halabja Monument with a circular shape and on area ( 1600 sqm ) built on the gate of Halabja city. It’s 19.88 m height. With (sixteen) columns and (four) hards and ( sixteen) fingers leads to the sky and among these fingers we see the earth symbol, these are the sign of chemical bombardment disaster. It’s a anti humanity disaster and regime of ba’ath did against kurds for their own purposes and tries to destroy universal systems.
