What an amazing afternoon! I wish I had longer to take a little more time but with a disability I tire easily.
However, fully suited to wheelchair users as well as those such as myself with walking difficulties. Outside and all floors accessible with disabled bathroom facilities within.
Didn’t realise the cafe was there so we had eaten in Virginia.
WW1 trench, so informative, shocking perhaps, and I believe the largest such display in Ireland and GB.
History of the Famine, emigration, WW1, rebellion, rising and Ancient order of Hibernians, Orange Order et al including some banners and many artefacts.
The history was laid out logically and, importantly, was very balanced and informative.
So glad we took a run out there in the car, a very enjoyable afternoon.
Need to get back few more times and look more thoroughly, doing it in sections.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Ample parking.
Lots here for school visits...
Read moreAmazing museum in Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan. There's something in the museum and outside grounds to keep eveyone interested. There are great displays on Gaelic football, Camogie, ancient Irish artefacts, life in a World War 1 trench, Irish Independence and rural Cavan life. The exhibitions are based on 3 floors and outside in the grounds at the back. Wheelchair users were visiting the same day that I was there and were able to use the lift to access each floor. You'll need to allow at least an hour to get around the exhibitions. The museum has a lovely cafe serving coffee and snacks, a good shop, toilet facilities and free parking. The staff are very welcoming and pleasant, I left my money in the cafe and one of the staff found me...
Read moreThis is a wonderful place. A wide range of exhibits in a building built as a poor Clare's convent. A really thought provoking outdoor installation depicting trenches in world war one which has more information inside. Great tributes to the men of the County who were killed in WW1. Another exhibit in the garden has a mock up of the GPO building in Dublin and tells the story of the 1916 Easter uprising. Over two floors inside there are a number of other displays. Crowned for me by the archaeology exhibit with finds from 5000 years ago. Top this with a great wee cafe and the friendliest staff l have ever met. It's well worth the entrance fee of €6 with discounts for senior citizens, children...
