It’s a hassle that the parking around the docks is 3 hours and the tour is 3 and a half hours so you need to use the free car park behind the impressive Cobh cathedral. For two adults and an under 12 was about €56 and included ferry crossing entrance to the fort and a small guided tour. You can either walk all around the island or stay closer to the fort which I would recommend. The tour is about 35 minutes then you are on your own. I believe you can get an audio guide giving more in depth information. The fort is well planned out and very neat and tidy. Information is displayed on boards detailing each area and what it was used for. The only down side is the coffee shop. It is fine for water and minerals but the coffee was bitter and burnt. I asked if it was okay if I flew my drone and once I produced my license and told them my flight plan they were more than happy to allow me fly. I would recommend a visit here as the place is full of historic interest and is different from the usual tours. It is a bit physical but they do provide very good access for people in wheelchairs or limited mobility. Also if you are not fit for the steep climb from the harbour to the cathedral car park you can get a taxi just across the road and it will...
Read moreI went there in a very sunny day in June.
I booked a ticket for 19€ from spike island website, which include return ticket and guide, and I also booked a return train tickets to Cobh for 10€ in the same day morning. You do not need to book the train tickets in advance, it is a commuter and u can use leap card.
After arriving at Cobh train, 10 minutes walk to the Spike Island kiosk and registered with my booking code. The kiosk stuff gave me a map and a ticket. You need to keep this ticket safe and need to show it on ur return. It was 3,5 hour in total, the return time is on the ticket.
All the people on the same boat is will be in the same group by one or more guide. Our guide was John G. He is very professional to guide us for around 1 hour. I used the rest of time walk around the island and laid down a bench.
There is a cafe on the island. It is the same price as in many shops in the city. I ordered a cup for 2€ and an ice cream for another 2€.
The island is not big and there are 2 bathrooms in...
Read moreVisited Spike island with a large group of family members. We had children from 10 months to 12 years old & then 11 adults. We'd a lovely day for it so we were very lucky as it's mostly outdoors so I can imagine on a wet day it would be miserable. The island tour is well organised as you get time to look around yourself and then a guided tour if you like. There's also a cafe on site and a playground! We packed our own lunch though which was a good idea as the vegetarian options in the cafe were limited. Really interesting to visit the prison and would definitely recommend the guided tour. Our guide Jack was extremely informative. Only criticism was that Jack told various ghost stories and given that there were so many children on the tour (lots from other families too) we thought he might have left it at one or two for the small audience! The details of the prison and how the prisoners were treated were scary enough! All in all a very worthwhile place to visit especially if in Cobh for...
