Had an absolutely fantastic day. All the staff were lovely, friendly, helpful and professional. There were numerous picnic tables on site, toilets in each area that were very well maintained. There are a few places to buy tea, coffee and drinks. Cian, our cave tour guide was very knowledgeable, patient and mindful of all participants on the tour. The cave tour was very informative and the cave is very well lit with handrails if needed. The tour took about 45 minutes with plenty of opportunities to take pictures. The Birds of Prey centre was well laid out with information signs for each bird. Jack and Gary were amazing and very funny during the Birds of Prey flying display. Both shared lots of facts and information about the birds during the display. There was plenty of opportunities for the audience to hold the birds during and after the display. The flying display lasted about an hour. The gift shops and the farm shop on site had some fabulous items for sale ranging from magnets to jewellery to art with lots of reasonably priced things to buy. The farm shop has cheese and fudge tasting. Well worth a visit, great for a family day out and suitable for all ages.

So the really short version is the Aillwee Cave is fabulous. The guided cave tour is excellent and the work done since the 1990s to make this accessible and entertaining is to be commended. The longer version is the whole experience including the bird of prey centre, and farmshop with cheese making and tasting, and some of the walks are simply excellent and it is tragic to think how many people miss out because they only experience just the cave. The even longer version is that a lot more thought needs to be put into this incredible location and experience, it really is only fully accessible by car and the bits feel disconnected from one another and desperately disconnected from Ballyvaughan and even other locations on the Burren (Pollnabrone is not very far). I suspect in posher parts of the world, cable cars would "fly" people over this unique, varied and stunning scenery. In Ireland, we should consider this too.

Staff shared that the caves flood twice per year and had just flooded on that Monday. We were warned water was coming in so we would need to take another path but not even 10 minutes into walking into the caves we were quickly escorted back out as the cave as the water was filling the main chamber. Still had to pay full price which didn't make any sense. They were also still selling tickets to go through the caves to other patrons as we were leaving which also didn't make sense. If I ever visit again I will update my experience however I cannot at this time give more than two stars as we drove from Dublin just to go through the cave, for the day in a sense to be wasted. I understand safety is a high concern especially since we saw the water draining out of the mountain however staff could have given advance warning to their Facebook page which would allow us to shift this travel to a different day.

What can I say.

Well worth the visit. I didn't go to the bird of prey show but it looked good from a distance. If you have the time I'd probably go.

Pay at drive in entrance. Seems dear but after visiting wasn't disappointed.

Cheese making shop and bird haven halfway up the mountain. Lots of parking and easily accessible toilets. Clean!

Interesting round stone house with swallows nest boxes inside.

Shop has glass wall to watch the gouda style cheese being made. Free tasting samples available. I liked the on site smoked but good choice. You can buy all their products.

They also have a well stocked shop with local produce all interesting. I bought burren honey and jam. Local Irish cook book.

You can sit outside with a tea or coffee. Well laid out and relaxed. Pleasant professional staff.

Drive on up the mountain to the cave entry. Great view over the Burren. Lots of easy parking.

Walk inside and another 2 shops, one for sweets and ice cream and sodas. The inside shop selling different items to the first shop.

Grand little cafe to have tea, coffee soup scones and sandwiches. All needed after your 1km walk through the cave tunnels!

Cave itself has a knowledge and pleasant guide who call their flock of tourists every 30 minutes or so.

Wear good shoes and maybe bring a small flashlight. Light is not totally necessary but would be handy.

Floor can be slightly slippy because it's wet and watch your head in spots but well worth the leisurely walk. Your guide will adjust their pace to your comfort level and answer all your questions.

Interestingly, it's only been open to the public since 1976. They have done a great job and it is sympathetically done.

I would highly recommend it. Lovely even 10 degrees Celsius all the time. It was sunny and hot outside 20 degrees so felt refreshing but pleasant. Wear a light jacket.

If it's raining outside the drips from ceiling and waterfall may splash...

My husband and I absolutely enjoyed our time at Aillwee Caves! The tour of the cave consisted of a pleasant informative walk which included cave rock formations, a "glimpse" of what the cave is like in the dark, underground waterfalls, bear hibernating nests (bears no longer live there!), and more. If you have a fear of bats, there are no bats in the caves along the tour. The cafe in the cave center also had delicious food at a reasonable price & the gift shop had many options for typical & unique souvenirs. A must see at the caves is the birds of prey center which is at the bottom of the hill from the caves. They have 3 flight displays each day where they show spectators 3 different birds of prey within a single display. So, if you stay for all 3 displays, you can see 9 different birds of prey in action up close. (We stayed for all 3 and had no regrets!) Plus, you can walk around the center to see other birds of prey at the center and enjoy listening to recorded information about each type of bird. My husband and I opted to also go on a Hawk Walk at the center, which we would HIGHLY recommend to anyone interested! Walking along the nearby forested area with our falconer Ava, who was a wonderful guide and a pleasure to talk to, and the friendly Harris Hawks, Juan and Shine-ad, was an experience of a life time that we will...
