Stop here! Important landmark of Ireland’s history. If not familiar with King Brian Boru, read Morgan Llywelyn’s LION OF IRELAND. Signage near the fort provides some historical context, but Llywelyn’s book more eloquently shares significance of the location and the man. We visited the fort after viewing Brian Boru’s tree a few miles away, oldest living tree in Ireland (1,010 yrs old).

Amazing place. Steeped in history. Well worth having a read about it. Wikipedia has a great write up. Photos don't do justice to the scale of the place and depth of the moat. Fortunately we walked out to it as there's only parking for a couple of cars across from the entrance. Not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs as its a turnstile entrance. Wonderful views down the river.

Well I loved it, son enjoyed running up and down the hills. Would be great if the council tried to recreate the fort but I suppose access to it is very limited. We parked on the main road opposite the turnstile and walked down. National monument well worth a visit if you are passing by and can use your imagination to visualise how it was!
