Knappogue castle is medieval tower house dating back to 1467 and it was built by Sean MacNamara.
It has a varied history ~ from being a site of a battle to a home. In 1571 the Castle became the seat of the MacNamara Clan, part of the Dalcassians. In 1659 it was confiscated by Cromwell's parliament and granted to Arthur Smith. When the monarchy was restored in 1670 Knappogue was returned to the MacNamaras. The MacNamara Clan sold the castle in 1800 when they experienced financial difficult, and it has changed hands a number of times subsequently. The entire staff is extremely talented and kind, the food is great, and the show / atmosphere puts you center stage of medieval times (including the lack of air con on a particularly hot day, but we managed perfectly fine).
If you’re in the area, you can’t skip this! We happened to be chosen as the main king and queen for the event, which was a lot of fun as well.

Read moreMy husband and I renewed our vows in the summer of 2016 inside the walled garden and had a wonderful three-day stay in the castle, which we had all to ourselves. The staff was absolutely amazing, the castle was beautiful (and such a blast to explore!), the medieval dinner was a great experience, and the grounds were stunning. Quin, the neighboring village, is also darling, and we enjoyed our evenings eating at the local restaurant and strolling among the ruins of Quin Abbey.
