The premises consists of several attractions. The park surrounding the mansion is a nice stroll. The compact gallery itself houses a different exhibition, we happened to visit during Locky Morris exhibition which was a nice teaser to an Irish artist we hadn’t heard about. The real pearl of this place is the Derek Hill house. This is a mansion TASTILY PACKED with artwork which mr Hill had collected & become the owner of over many decades. The tour took 45 minutes but could as well take 4-5 hours to really have the opportunity to enjoy the mountain of works. The guide was noticeably KNOWLEDGEABLE and could give contextual insights, a real pleasure to listen to. Well worth the time, money and drive. But be aware of the tight setting inside the mansion: I wouldn’t recommend going on tour with more than 5 visitors.
There is possibility to change babies diapers in the women’s bathroom. The tea room was closed during our visit, most likely due...
Read moreSome friends and I were hiking about for a camping spot when we heard music coming from the gallery. We called up and asked what was going on and whether it was open to the public and we were told that there a vinyl listening party on to which we were welcome to come.
So we went in and were immediately made to feel at home by everyone there (in spite of the fact that we'd blundered into someone's birthday party). It was hosted in a lovely little gazebo in a clearing and we were plied with beer and cake and crisps for the road and the dj there was absolutely fantastic, she just played banger after banger. Great taste.
Anyway the cafe is lovely too and the gallery itself is gorgeous and diverse but the main reason I can't recommend the glebe enough is for its friendly, genuine, and communal atmosphere. Thank you again to the people (John in particular) for the warm welcome and much...
Read moreWe visited only because the day was wet, but were rewarded with one of the most fascinating and enjoyable mornings of our trip to Donegal. The house and garden are absolutely delightful and worth visiting on their own account. What makes this a 5* place, however, is the incomparable art collection that literally litters the house and the very high standard of the guided tour. Our guide Kevin knew the artist and provenance of every painting (there are 1000s) as well as every detail of the fascinating life of Derek Hill. This house is not only worth visiting if you are in Donegal, it is a reason to...
