First timers here at Ards but long time lovers of Donegal. We took a wrong turn despite using Google maps in search of Lucky Shell 🐚 beach and ended up at Ards Friary F92Y23R. Free parking. Public toilets there which were in good condition. Cafe in situ in the friary which we didn't check out as we had brought a picnic. One way in with ramps and another way out also with ramps. Fabulous views of Tramore and Downings beaches and the sandy bay. We walked the coastal loop to the left of the friary going past the grotto and Lady Isabella beach which is dangerous to swim at due to the currents (signs up) but sheltered for young children. We persevered up a relatively steep gravel uneven path (not wheelchair accessible) to spot Lucky Shell beach. When we landed and for a good while after we had the beach to ourselves: heavenly. Safe to swim at, had the water been tepid enough. Both kids aged 6 and under had a dip but their shrieks on contact with the water indicated it was baltic. Not as sheltered as the beach we had passed but guess that is whichever way the wind is blowing. Just beautiful. Lifebuoys noted here as well.
