This tower house is situate on private land. The land has been churned up by cattle and access is consequently difficult. There is a stile by the road but the approach is uphill, uneven and slippery. When you get to the castle it is all locked up and you cannot gain access.
Take a photo from the roadside and move along. There are many castles in this part of the world. The longest continually inhabited castle is less than three kilometers away in Dunamon. Presently it belongs to the Divine Word Missionaries. Further back the road some of the remains of Charles Coote's castle survive at Castlecoote (hint is in the name) and then you have Roscommon Castle in Roscommon town.
This Castle was home to David Burke of Clonconway. He probably built it in the 1630s probably on the site of an earlier building. Aughrim is close enough to Glinsk Castle to invent a link to the battle. Effectively, it burned down a long time ago, has no verified history of ever been attacked or been anything more than a stout residence for a wealthy family.
Glinsk Castle is 6.5 km (4 miles) SE of Ballymoe...
