Decided on a whim to drive down from Dublin to see Kylemore Abbey. I then remembered having done the Killary Fjord cruise during a boozy stag weekend in the early 2000s so, deciding that my children would obviously prefer 90 minutes on the Atlantic to the delights of Kylemore Abbey, we changed our destination on the sat nav.
The drive from Dublin is VERY long. Getting to Galway City is handy with the Motorway but once this stops, you are back on 1980’s roads. I’d forgotten how big a county Galway is. Then scenery is, however, breathtaking.
The boat is moored a little past the quaint village of Leenane. We had tried booking the tickets online in the car but I hadn’t activated my new credit card for online purchases. We called the number and the chilled-out chap told us not to worry - we could sort it all out when we got there.
Being almost at the end of the season, the boat was only about 25% full. Having two toddlers under-4, I am always anxious about being on the water with them. But the rails on the desk are securely wired so it would be very difficult for mischievous children to fall overboard.
While my wife and children enjoyed their chowder and mussels, I stayed on the deck to enjoy the breathtaking view. The recorded commentary is of a very high standard - not the usual Oirish nonsense provided for American tourists.
Without me asking, one of the crew asked if I’d like to visit the captain in the bridge. I jumped at this kind offer and spent a very enjoyable 15 minutes with the captain. He graciously and patiently answered all my questions and told me all about what is involved with keeping such a vessel afloat. It was only the arrival of my wife and children - wondering where I’d gotten to - that ended this maritime masterclass!
Anyway, a great way to spend a few hours. And great value for money. If only the motorway went...
