The Plassey Shipwreck is a famous wreck located on Inis Oírr (Inisheer), the smallest of the Aran Islands in County Galway, Ireland. The MV Plassey, a cargo ship, was wrecked during a severe storm in 1960 and was washed ashore by huge waves. Today, its rusted remains lie dramatically overturned on the rocky coast, making it one of Ireland’s most iconic and photographed shipwrecks.

Key Facts: Location: Inis Oírr (Inisheer), Aran Islands, Co. Galway Ship Type: Steam trawler turned cargo vessel Wrecked: March 8, 1960, during a violent storm Notable Feature: Featured in the opening credits of the TV show "Father Ted" Accessibility: A short walk from the island’s pier—easy to visit

Why Visit? Striking photo opportunity against the wild Atlantic backdrop Combines well with a trip to the Aran Islands’ other attractions A fascinating piece of maritime history

Pros are that it looks cool and you can walk right up to it, touch it, climb about on it if you're brave enough and up to date on your tetanus shots. Cons are that there is almost no information about the wreck, no placards or signs explaining why it's here, and parts of the inside have bottles and other litter. It's a 10 minute bike ride or 30 minute walk from the harbor. You can also take a pony trap. You can see the local lighthouse from here (and we were advised by a local to see the wreck but not to bother continuing on to the lighthouse up close) and there are some walks nearby that we did not explore due to the rain but could be lovely on a slightly less damp day. Well worth a visit if you're on Inis Oirr but do your own research to make it feel worthwhile. Or go because you like being out and the destination...

Amazing close up opportunity to see a shipwreck. It is about 20 min walk from the ferry or you can take the horse and cart tour to get here.

The MV Plassy, or Plassey, was a steam trawler launched in late 1940 and eventually owned by the Limerick Steamship Company Limited.

On 8 March 1960, while sailing through Galway Bay carrying a cargo of whiskey, stained glass and yarn, it was caught in a severe storm and ran onto Finnis Rock, Inisheer, Aran Islands.

The Plassey shipwreck is visible in the opening credits of the television...

Visiting the Plassey Shipwreck on Inis Oirr was a fascinating experience! The wreck is a captivating sight, with its rusted frame contrasting beautifully against the rugged landscape and ocean backdrop. The views from the site are stunning, offering a unique perspective of the island's natural beauty. The ship itself has an eerie, cool charm that makes it an interesting spot for history enthusiasts and photographers alike. Just be wary that it's the only thing there, so it can be just a quick stop visit

What an incredible small town! We took a horse "Black Betty" directly from the ship. Her first stop was the shipwreck. Got to get off and take pictures. They then took us to the hotel where we ate the most amazing seafood chowder and pizza. We had a crepe and walked along the beach where a local dog convinced us to play fetch for a solid 20 minutes. We finished our short tour with a hand carved piece of slate jewelry from a local who was too humble to accept a tip. Amazing people and incredible views.
