Portumna Forest Park in County Galway is a beautiful, peaceful spot for a family outing. The wide woodland and grassy glades feel very serene. Kids can roam and play freely among the trees, and there’s plenty of wildlife (you might spot squirrels or deer). There are lots of trails for walking and biking throughout the park of varying lengths through the woods With so much open space, kids love zipping around or kicking a ball on the grass between trails. Visitor facilities are very family-friendly. There’s a car park right at the entrance, and yes, toilets on site In short, the park is set up to be convenient so families can focus on fun and exploring. If you head a short distance out of the park you can reach Lough Derg, but the forest itself is all trees and trails. Overall it’s a warm, welcoming place that’s hard to beat for a relaxed family day out. It feels safe and laid-back, and families really seem to love it.

A real hidden gem! It is an absolutely beautiful forest filled with a varying amount of trees. It is not just one of these tree farms that Coilte label as a 'forest". The area is buzzing with wildlife from small birds to dear. The walking trails are in great condition and looked after and there was very little visibile rubbish while I was there. I'd definitely recommend visiting if you like the outdoors or are just looking for a place to take a long stroll.

Portumna Forest Park is a peaceful 600-hectare woodland on the shores of Lough Derg, ideal for walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting. With marked trails, lake views, and family-friendly amenities, it’s a great spot for a relaxed day out. Highlights include scenic forest paths, orienteering routes, and the chance to spot white-tailed sea eagles. The toilet facilities are very basic with room to improve greatly. Portumna Castle and marina are nearby.

What a forest park, it’s beautiful and hidden away. This time of the year, the blue bells were at blossom deep in the forest and it was splendid. There is easy link to the marina, castle and the town. But at the moment there is a lack of signs and it’s a bit of task to orient yourself. Highly recommend boots and maps or gps to help you navigate through the forest. Together with the park, the castle, fairy and the town itself could be a weekend trip to wind off! Any age group...
