Cong Abbey is a lovely spot entrenched in history and fame.

From its ancient walls, to its wonderfully maintained gardens it is truly a sight to behold and is an absolute must if you're visiting Ireland for the first time.

It is also situated int he village of Cong where the Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara was filmed and so for any movie buff or fan of the film itself this place is an essential stop on any tour of our beautiful country.

The walk around Cong Abbey is serene and picturesque and it gives a general feeling of quiet ease and peace at any time of day or night(if you're feeling a little restless).

Cong village is very cute and offers a few lovely restaurants and pubs where you'll be treated with a delicious pint of Guinness or if you're feeling a little adventurous one of their lovely local craft beers.

All in all, it's definitely worth a journey to Cong and its Abbey for...

Beautiful Village set in a picturesque area for narrow lovers in Co. Mayo. The area where the film classic The QuiteMan starting John Wayne and Maureen O Hara is set. Also the home for the famous luxury hotel that is Ashford Castle. This was my 4th visit, I've been with other friends and family previously. It's a great destination for nostalgia for those of a certain vintage because of the film, it has a museum dedicated to the Film and there are pages to see for the history lover too. This time we treated ourselves to lunch in Ryans hotel, the quality of the food and the ambient of style theme of the bar did not disappoint. The only thing I would change is the weather, it was horrible the...

In the early 7th century, a church had been built here and after a turbulent history, it was refounded as an Augustinian settlement in 1138, making it one of the earliest south of Armagh, which was founded in 1126.

Ireland’s last High King, Rory O’Connor, spent the last 15 years of his life here. These walls were attacked and rebuilt and sometime after 1542 the Abbey was suppressed and fell to ruin. The remnants have been praised to feature some of the finest examples of early gothic architecture.

A surprisingly beautiful place, even though it’s a cemetery beauty and peace in every corner.

This is such a must visit structure. When I saw the ruins of the abbey it made me think that I have seen something from history. The ruins shows thick stone walls, a lot of old tombstones, there was even one that showed 1549. The abbey has sprawling lawn in the back with a bridge that would take you across the river. On the river is a stone structure where the monks used to fish. You have to visit this abbey and make it part of your itinerary. This is a free self tour. No tickets needed.
