Most enjoyable trail. Departing from the historic Ballintubber Abbey makes you feel like you are following footsteps of old as you head towards Croagh Patrick…. Which always seemed in view! Challenging at times but made easier as the support bus carried rucksacks and met us with plenty snacks/water along the way. Trail goes through fields, woods and bogland so can be muddy but with ‘no complaining!’ you just need a spare pair of socks. The long road at the end might benefit from a change into trainers before ascending the back of the mountain. Enjoyed singing at the ancient Boher Stone Mass rock and the ‘wow’ moment when you reach the shoulder of the Reek looking out across Clew Bay. Well organised, sign posts were clear and styles/bridges had been recently upgraded. Met lots of lovely, friendly people along the way. A great opportunity to chat, reflect and take time out. After nearly 10 hours the pint at the end was most welcomed! A very special, scenic pilgrim path. Would...
Read moreI walked Tochar Phadraig on 31 August 24. The pilgrimage is very well organised, guided and supported by Ballintubber Abbey. This is a 35km walk culminating by crossing the shoulder at Croagh Patrick and is not to be underestimated. It is a challenging event for even the fittest walker, however I found it a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. The first half of the route is across countryside on fields and tracks. The second half as you approach Croag Patrick is largely on roads. There were a number of planned breaks with water and snacks provided. It was a hot day and the breaks were very welcome! A number of volunteer guides accompanied and lead the walk. They are a lovely bunch of people, knowledgable and friendly. The walk takes 8-10 hours in total but is well worth the effort. Thanks to all at Ballintubber Abbey for organising this event. I would whole heartedly recommend...
Read moreI completed this Walk from Ballintubber abbey to Aughagower and I was delighted to have finished such a beautiful and scenic Pilgrim Path. The organisers did an amazing job from the initial registration to the the delivery of the event. Everything was explained clearly and any queries I had were addressed promptly. They were also there throughout the route to store anything we needed minding and they were very generous providing fruit, snacks and water for everyone. They also gave us a hand painted stone and a certification of completion at the end, which was lovely to receive and keep as a memory. I would highly recommend you do this walk and it is a great way to see more of parts of Mayo that are off the...
