As I had lived in Ireland for several years, Kerm beach now has a spot in peoples hearts because of the Banshees of Inisherin, which is a brilliant film, and partially shot on Keem Beach.
As I was based in Co Sligo, I had a lovely drive through to Achill island, which is beautiful in itself. It was actually by listening to the radio and hearing of the casts awards nominations, and that the beach is one of Irelandās best beaches, so off I drove!
It took me approx 1 hour 25 mins to drive there from Easkey village, taking in an opportunity to see it before the summer when Iām sure every movie fan will be there to take a shot of āColmās houseā!
Achill island in itself is a place of stunning surrounds, and a spin up the top of the hill is recommended (where the pylons are!)
Roads are narrow, depending on the way you take. But the views from the top are well worth it, I went in winter and the clear views and crispness of the air are well worth it alone!
The beach itself is tiny compared to many others that hug Irelandās coastline, plus itās on an island! On the way up to the beach you will have the option of driving up a steep hill, obviously what I did, but a walk to the beach I would recommend when itās warmer. The views from the top of the hill leading to the drop on the other side overlooking the beach are staggering. I wished I took a proper camera instead of an iPhone to take pictures.
Itās a shame to see so many businesses closed on the way through, but Iām sure a good summer and lots of passing trade itāll be one of the places to be in...

Stroll along the nearby cliff walk for incredible views of the bay and discover the Deserted Village which was abandoned in the early 20th century. Keem Bay, "ultra clean waters" and "beautiful rural and picturesque location" at the western end of Achill Island is one of the most picturesque small beaches in Ireland. Keem Bay once had a booming fishing industry and its waters used to be filled with traditional fishing boats called "currachs". It's thought that artist Paul Henry visited the beach when painting his famous work Launching the Currach, which now hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. Locals would set out in wooden currachs to catch basking sharks.Ā Nearby, the abandoned village of Bunowa houses the remains of 17 circular cottages. Thereās is a public toilet, few benches and coffee kiosk (americano only). Thereās is no car parking but everyone leaving the on the road, difficult...

Croaghaun cliffs are officially the highest sea cliffs in Ireland and theyāre one of the most unique places to visit in Mayo.
Youāll find them on Achill Island where they stand at a mind-boggling 2,257 feet/687 meter.
The hike to Croaghaun, if you take the route below from near Keem, will take between 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, depending on 1, pace and 2, how long you stop to soak up the views
Achill is a also a fantastic place for cycling. The island has three looped trails in the Achill Cycle Hub. It is also at one end of the magnificent new Great Western Greenway.
