What should be one of the most spectacular views in Ireland has been utterly ruined through excessive and wanton road building. First of all, there's not one, but three car parks, all at different levels, on the assumption that most people are either too decrepit or atrophied to walk less than a kilometre to the summit. What's more, hikers share the space with cars on the roads up, constantly adjusting position to accommodate them, inhaling clouds of chalky road dust and fumes in their wake. When you're at the top, you can't even do a 360 degree pan shot....because there's a car park right behind. When we were there, we saw two working JCBs, and two HGVs filled with yet more road surface material, lumbering up to the summit, all in the service of.....cars. Not the view. Cars. Whichever genius conceived of this initiative hasn't got the faintest idea what 'visual amenity' means. They've taken a wrecking ball to these cliff views, and charged each motorist €5 in a circular subsidy of the operation. Unless I'm living in some parallel universe, this...
Read moreFantastic plce to visit when down in Kerry. Get the ferry which runs all day back and forth to the island. Then land in Knights Town. Then off up the mountain. The roads are a bit narrow but in good condition. You have to pay to go up to the top of the mountain. It's 6 euro per car. Not sure what it is to walk or bike. Well worth seeing though. You can see for nearly 20 miles, 360 degrees from the top. In what is one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland that is a real treat. Also there are over 50 little plaques with information about the whole area. These are brilliant. Between trying to get the first cross Atlantic communications cable from here to the US. A land also the history of the area and places that you can see they are worth reading. For a place that is small and not hugely well know it is well worth a visit. You can use the toilet at the place where you pay and also get a nice coffee or hot chocolate. It's not a restaurant, just a little hut. It is spotlessly...
Read moreOne of the most picturesque places in Ireland 🍀 Geokaun Mountain and Fogher Cliffs. Previous time we met there so hard wind, that we had all chances just to fly into the sky like balloons. This time we had all the best of the weather for a nice walk. My biggest pleasure was the sky with these amazing clouds. I adore the cliffs, from which you look into the ocean and see the waves like in a slow motion video, to watch how water changes the colors, depending on the sky. And we also enjoyed just looking into the distance, to the horizon, and to see some clouds tear and pour rain into the turquoise water. The place is not crowded at all, most of the time you feel like you are there alone, you can see some people occasionally of course, but maybe a dozen in a couple of hours. A picnic with hot tea could be a great idea for this place, though we didn’t have one. Anyway, emotions were...
