Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens in County Cork, Ireland, offers a delightful experience for visitors interested in history, horticulture, and serene natural beauty. Situated on Fota Island, a short distance from Cork City, the estate provides a captivating glimpse into the past alongside stunning landscapes. Review: A visit to Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens is a journey through time and nature. The centrepiece, Fota House, is a beautifully preserved Regency-era mansion, once home to the prominent Smith-Barry family. Guided tours of the house, often led by knowledgeable and engaging volunteers, offer fascinating insights into the lives of the gentry and the servants who supported their lifestyle. You'll explore elegant rooms filled with period furnishings and artwork, including a notable collection of landscape paintings. The meticulously restored service wing provides a compelling contrast, showcasing the daily routines of the household staff. However, the true jewel of Fota is arguably its extensive arboretum and gardens. Established in the 19th century, the 11-hectare arboretum boasts an impressive collection of rare and exotic trees and shrubs from around the world, thriving in the mild Cork climate. Wandering through the winding paths, you'll encounter magnificent specimens, some of the earliest introductions of their kind in Europe. Highlights include collections of acers, magnolias, and rhododendrons, alongside unique features like an Italianate sunken garden, an orangery, and a charming fernery. The Victorian Working Garden is another must-see. This restored walled garden, complete with glasshouses and a charming orchard, offers a glimpse into the self-sufficient practices of the past. It's now a vibrant space where volunteers cultivate produce and plants, demonstrating sustainable gardening techniques. Key Highlights: Fota House: A beautifully preserved Regency mansion with guided tours offering historical insights. Arboretum: An internationally renowned collection of rare and exotic trees and shrubs. Victorian Working Garden: A restored walled garden showcasing historical horticulture and sustainable practices. Scenic Walks: Explore the expansive grounds and enjoy the tranquility of the natural surroundings. Educational Opportunities: Learn about history, botany, and sustainable gardening. Café: Relax and enjoy refreshments at the on-site café. Potential Considerations: Accessibility: Some areas of the gardens may have uneven terrain. Tour Schedules: Guided house tours may have specific times, so it's advisable to check in advance. Seasonal Changes: The gardens will look different depending on the time of year. Overall: Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens offers a rich and rewarding experience. Whether you're captivated by history, enthralled by nature, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, this estate provides a memorable day out in a stunning setting. The dedication to preserving both the historical house and the diverse plant collections is evident, making it a true gem in...

What a fantastic place to visit. I have been to fota wildlife park many times over the years and often admired fota house in the distance , but only yesterday did we finally decide to journey over after the park. I always assumed the house was closed off so was surprised when we arrived that you could actually get a tour which we did. The house and the grounds are in amazing condition and really well looked after. We've visited many old houses around the country and this is probably the first where we were allowed to take pictures inside. I always hate when we can't take pictures as it's easy to forget the memories of what we saw, so it was really cool we had this opportunity. The tour was absolutely fantastic and great value for money. The tour guide Niall went into great depths of the history and I had no idea a house that was held by a family of such high importance was sitting right in our backyard. Normally house tours we've done last about 30 mins and visit around 6 to 10 rooms, but this was different, this tour must of lasted at least an hour to an hour and a half if not more, and felt like Niall was going to show us every inch of the house because I lost count of how many rooms we got to see. It was brilliant, we've never got such good value for money. There was so much history to hear about and fascinating to hear the many stories about the lives of the children that would of worked on the lands for the masters at the times. Fota house was really a great experience and I would highly recommend anyone visiting the wildlife park or visiting cork, to stop off here and take the tour because it's well worth the money. The Cafe does lovely fresh cakes and the gardens are a beautiful place for a...

I ALWAYS love Fota Gardens. I have not toured the house as each time I have gone previously I have been told they did not have enough staff to operate the lift. I find that ridiculous and while the Gardens get 5 stars, the accessibility, in spite of having a lift, gets a 1. The other issue I have is the inaccessibility of the greenhouse. There are two possible entrances, and they choose to use the inaccessible one only. If they made arrangements to use the other instead, then most people would be able to enter. I feel that accessibility for those with mobility issues is not of the most minor concern for them.

The small Cafe has great food, but in non-Covid times is so crammed that a wheelchair user would have difficulty using it. The food is very good, though the service is quite slow because the staff have no room to work efficiently despite their good efforts.

The Gardens themselves never disappoint regardless of the season or weather. My narrow manual wheelchair is able to fit on most paths without difficulty. I visit frequently and would like to see an improvement in some aspects of accessibility as well as education for the volunteers and staff around guest services...specifically "We don't have enough staff to operate the lift so you can't go...

Attended the Wonderlights display, which was held here this year. I think this may have been the first time it was held here. But hopefully not the last. A magnificent, magical, and highly entertaining evening was had by all. It was displayed perfectly using the natural features of Fota without compromising the natural beauty of the place. A stroll of approximately an hour takes you on a loop back to the starting point where gorgeous food and treats are being served in well organised and highly efficient festive stalls. Words won't do this display justice. Check out the pics. Catch it before it's gone. You won't regret it.

Delightful Period House with Cafe, inside and outdoor seating also a very nice shop, set in a good few acres of beautiful gardens with fabulous flowers, shrubs and ancient trees, all of this adjoining the famous wildlife park which has it's own stop on the Cork Kent Street to Cobh railway line 🚉 During the summer there are various outdoor productions for all ages to enjoy, just saw Cinderella by the Chapterhouse Theatre Co. it was really good fun 🐄 especially Milky White the Cow. Friday 9th Sept and Charterhouse has returned with a fab show of Elton and ABBA, must say we had a terrific night up on the dance floor.
