Aghaboe is most famed as the birthplace of Saint Fergal. The Austrian government had a large part in refurbishing this ruin as a result. The present structure is a Dominican Priory and dates to 15th century only. Access and car-parking are good and the ruin is well-kept.

Mention is made of an Augustinian Priory at Aghamacart dedicated to Saint Tiernaigh (Tierney/Tiernan). This abbey lies three to the south west of Durrow and Aghaboe is about equidistant to the north west. The Augustinian Canons lived on the site of the present Church of Ireland church and the Dominican Friars in the adjoining abbey. It is likely that there was a small community of Augustinian Canons as Aghaboe was the cathedral for Ossory. The canons moved to Kilkenny in 1190.

Despite its suppression in 1540, there is a list naming all the priors of the community without giving actual dates. Priors serve a three-year term and that can be renewed once. Stopping at Aghaboe Abbey, I honestly didn’t expect to learn so many interesting things and uncover such a fascinating piece of Irish history. This peaceful, quiet site holds centuries of stories, from its monastic beginnings to its role in Ireland’s religious and cultural heritage. The ruins are atmospheric and well cared for, with detailed signage that helps bring the past to life. Even though it’s a small site, it feels rich in history and importance. If you're in the area, it's well worth a visit — whether you're a history lover or just someone looking for a quiet, meaningful stop on your journey. Sometimes the most unexpected places leave the...

A beautifully preserved Abbey dating from 1382 in a rural setting. It's nice and tranquil. It's located beside Saint Canice's 17th Century Church and there's parking provided as well. Not much visited so it's not too busy. It's just 20 minutes down the road from Portlaoise. A lot of work has been done here to preserve this National Monument and it's very...
